I let out a quiet groan as I stretch my arms above my head. A chess set of ivory and obsidian sits before me.
It took time, but I finally finished it.
A magic chess set. Each piece has its own special effect.
"Well, now maybe I can use the sleep-"
"Wait... 'use the sleep?' My god. I am tired."
I think Ddraig went back to hibernating like he did for a majority of the three-month sword binge.
The chess pieces themselves were fairly easy to make. Each piece can cast a spell per day, the pawns, a first level cure light wounds, the rooks? Stoneskin. The bishops can cast... uh... blood Biography once per day.
To be honest, I was out of ideas for the bishop, so I though to myself 'Bishops are smart, right? Let's give them a thing that's good for detective-ing.
And the rest is history.
Anyways, the knights can cast haste, the queen piece can cast Cat's Grace, Bull's Strength, and Bear's Endurance on a single target, and the King piece can do an at will wall of stone.
Most of my time went to making the king piece, shortly followed by the Queen as I had to figure out how to get them to cast three spells at once when you activate it.
Even the chessboard itself is also magical, but it merely has a durability enchantment on it.
I let out a quiet yawn and wipe my eyes, swiftly placing a gilded letter in between the two sides and boxing the chess set.
I wrap a bow around the box and suck it into my dimensional storage.
Now I should probably go to bed.

Pov: Elsewhere.
Something is... wrong...
A man with long blond hair wearing vibrant armor with a halo atop his head frowns at a large glowing... thing...
He isn't as experienced as his father was when it comes to managing this thing, but he is knowledgeable enough about Heaven's system to detect anomalies. All Seraph are.
What currently has his attention... is that a devil can say his father's name without feeling any form of discomfort... and a younger devil at that.
Why he is unaffected... it is unknown. There's also the matter that he was able to wield Excalibur destruction to its full potential by merely holding it once.
That is a much larger issue. Something is wrong with Heaven's system. It wasn't tampered with... it just seems to have... glitched... granting the devil the ability to wield holy swords and theoretically pray if he ever wanted.
The main problem is... he doesn't exactly know how to fix it.
The devil is currently under observation, to make completely sure that he doesn't abuse his strange immunity.
Griselda said that he had a sacred gear. Being a pure-blooded devil, he would have absolutely had to rip it out of someone to gain it, killing them in the process. However, it is entirely possible that the person he ripped it out of was a vile despicable human being, in which case, it would be reasonable for a greedy race to try and claim power of a sacred gear.
He will give the boy the benefit of the doubt... for now... he was polite to Griselda and her two apprentices, but devils are tricky... it's difficult to know if he was doing that because he wanted a piece of the holy grail, or if he truly is a 'nice' devil.
Over the past few months, the Seraphs made a discovery... this Gaius Decarabia- or Seth as he told one of Griselda's apprentices she could call him- doesn't get out much.
With a flash of teleportation, another figure appears in the room, an absolutely stunning woman with vibrant golden hair and a halo atop her head.
"Brother!"
"Yes, Gabriel?" The man asks as he turns to face her.
"It's Extraordinary!" She grins. "He made Caledfwlch into a holy sword!"
"Oh? That's... unusual... I would have expected a demonic sword, but he seems to want to capitalize on his holy immunities. Smart."
"He isn't the one who is wielding it, however." The woman grins. "And when the wielder held it, the blade put out an aura roughly on par with that of Caliburn!"
"WHAT?!" The Seraph exclaims with a shocked expression. "That is- that should be-"
"Impossible?" The woman smiles. "I suppose. But then there's the fact that the sword is also putting out a demonic aura."
"A Holy Demonic Sword?" The man mutters. "That really is impossible."
"Impossible or not, he did it." Gabriel smiles, only for her smile to falter. "I believe we may have made a mistake when we didn't try to form a connection with him."
"Yes, I as well. However, as things stand, we are unable to give any devil some form of leeway. The church would regretfully be up in arms, and the fallen angels may see it as a threat."
The other angel gives her brother a sad look. "We both know Azazel wouldn't care. He may even be trying to meet this devil as we speak."
"It's not Azazel I'm worried about." The man sighs. "However, meeting this boy does seem like something he would attempt."
He frowns for a moment. "As much as I hate to say it, there really is nothing we can do at the moment. Perhaps we may be able to speak about it when the tension between the three factions have lessened."

Pov: Elsewhere?
"Hn? He turned Caledfwlch into an incredibly powerful holy sword? Bitchin' I'm gonna go meet the brat."
"Azazel, wouldn't that strain the-"
"The relations between factions will be fiiiine. It won't change if nobody knows I'm doing it."
"Sir. Sir please. We can't handle another thrashing by Serafall. That woman is vicious, and if she knew that the Grigori's strongest was trying to get close to the last member of two clans she would politically obliterate us."
"fiiiine. I'll send some mooks to get a read on the brat. first" The black haired- with blond bangs- man sighs dramatically as he waves off his companion. "What was the name of that black haired girl? The one who idolized me or something? She wouldn't mess this sort of thing up."
"Raynare, sir?"
"Ah. Raynare. Tell her to pick out a couple people and begin observation duty in Kuoh."
"Er... Right away?"
"Sure." The Twelve Winged Fallen shrugs.
"I... see... I will go tell her at once." The other fallen weakly mutters.

Pov: Returned.
I blink at a sheet of paper and let out a low hum. "Huh... they really did remove the requirement for me to a virgin from the marriage contract."
I had meant to check this after the steamy bath with Ravel and her mother, but I had forgotten it during Serafall's... Serafall-ness, then more or less kept of putting it off whenever it came to mind.
It's nice to know that I can fuck who I want now.
It looks like Ravel still has the virginity clause though.
Nice.
I look to my watch.
"Oh. It seems like it's time for Sona's party." I note with a small smile as I grab the nearby invitation.
The magic circle on the paper lights up, and with a flash, I appear in a vibrant ballroom decorated with streamers and a large chandelier at the top of the room. I can faintly see the words 'So-Tan' inscribed amongst the gemstones bedazzling it, so clearly Serafall commissioned it.
"Gaius?"
A voice catches my attention as I turn to look at Sona who is wearing a tasteful blue dress that comes to her knees. "You are... early... surprisingly early in fact."
"Wait... really?" I mutter as I look to my watch. "It's ten."
"Yes... it is supposed to start at twelve." She stresses.
I fall silent and look to my invitation. "Then why does my invitation say ten?"
"What?" The girl blinks owlishly.
She marches over to me as I offer her my invitation, she takes it slowly and skims it.
"It... does say ten." She whispers. "Wait. This is Serafall's handwriting."
"But why would she want you here early?" The girl mutters as she cups her chin. "In fact, I haven't seen her all day. Normally on my birthdays she is always nearby... strange."
"Maybe she's busy preparing something for your birthday and wants me to entertain you?" I shrug.
Sona opens her mouth to say something but pauses abruptly. "Wait... you know something. Don't you?"
"Perhaps." I smile as I summon a wrapped gift. "Anyways, here's your present. It took me a while to enchant everything, so I hope you like it."
"Oh?" She mutters. "Don't think I don't see you trying to distract me, Gaius."
"I just want it to be a surprise." I shrug with a small smile. "I will admit that Serafall did seek me out for something. But I'm not going to reveal what."
She narrows her eyes. "Serafalls plans normally all end up some form of way to embarrass me."
"She doesn't mean for that to happen." I shrug.
The glasses wearing girl sighs and allows her shoulders to slump as she takes my gift. "I know... it's just... I don't feel as if that's a way the Satan of Foreign Affairs should act."
"She's incredibly professional when it matters so, I see no need her to be serious and grumpy all the time. Without her personality, she wouldn't be Serafall, she'd be... random black-haired devil." I respond with a small shrug as I follow her to a nearby table and sit across from her as she takes a seat.
"Serafall is actually pretty fun to be around." I note. "You are incredibly lucky to have someone like that."
Sona goes to open her mouth, but flinches and clamps her mouth shut.
Oooh. She was about to say something insensitive.
Probably along the lines of 'something something your dead parents'.
She instead gazes down at the gift in front of her and carefully opens it, taking care to not rip the wrapping paper.
She looks to the wooden box with gold inlays and gives it a perturbed look.
She opens it, revealing the chess set I had been working on and carefully takes the letter.
She skims it for a moment. "You gave me a chess set that has magical abilities?"
"Yep." I nod. "It took a little while to make, and sorry for the Bishops, I couldn't really think of anything good to do for them, so I just placed a detective-esque spell in them. You probably won't find a need to use it more than once in a while, but I just couldn't get rid of the symmetry."
"Being able to ask four questions with any form of blood is a little niche... but it is honestly an incredibly useful ability in many situations. In fact, I haven't seen anything like it." Sona begins "And what of the king piece? The ability to freely command stone? Those two pieces could be used to instantaneously change battlefields. And the queen piece gives an increase similar to that of a twice critical! Even a single piece of this set would be a great gift, but you have given me thirty two?!"
"Happy birthday." I shrug with a small smile.
The girl frowns at the board for a moment, then eventually looks up. "Would you care for a game?"
"Ah, it's been quite a while since I've played chess, so I am unsure if I am still any good, but if it'll help pass the time, sure, I'll play a game or two... at least until the other people arrive."
"Very well." The girl nods as she swiftly sets up the pieces. "Would you like to have the white or black set?"
"I'll take the black pieces." I slowly mutter, a plan forming in my mind. A plan to get Serafall into my bed, of course.
All I need to do is put quite a few ranks in 'Profession Chess Grandmaster' and- ow ow ow. That's some knowledge.
"Alright, in that case I will go first." The girl states as she slowly moves a pawn forwards.
I just might have a chance.
"Ah, Lord Decarabia?" I hear an older voice mutter. "You are... quite early."
I glance to the side to see Sona's father appear from a nearby doorway.
"Lord Sitri." I greet as I absentmindedly move a single pawn piece forward. "It seems your other daughter has played a small prank on me."
He lets out an exasperated sigh as he shakes his head. "That girl."
"It's no big deal." I shrug with a small smile absentmindedly taking note that Sona moves a piece. "I had nothing else to do today."
I move my knight out of the back line as I look to Lord Sitri. "So, it has been a while, but I suppose I should ask, what do you think of the potions? Are they still working to your expectations?"
"I believe that they have saved quite a few lives. Most wounds can be healed swiftly with an IV drip, and that has certainly prevented a lot of headaches... healing magic is just so hard to come by, and the traditional devil method is just so... slow."
Ah yes. The traditional devil method of getting naked. A classic.
I move another chess piece. "Ah. Good. I have had plans recently to revise the formula... I have developed something that should work at around twice the power of the normal potions, yet I am unsure if I want to start mass producing these, or wait until I can figure out a further upgrade... because currently, I feel that the new recipe is really inefficient. It barely costs more than the standard ones I currently sell you, but the production time is four times longer."
"Hn. The decrease in production speed would certainly be an issue, due to how many potions we use."
"That's what I thought." I nod slowly. "That's why I am not selling these... tier two healing potions. I am going to wait till I discover a tier three, or perhaps even a tier four."
We continue like this for a while, Sona's father sometimes asking questions to me about my potions, as time passes, sweat steadily begins to form on Sona's brow. I am backing her into a corner. I can tell it is driving her mad. I- someone who doesn't even appear to be paying full attention to the match, is meeting her blow for blow and more often than not, coming out the victor in our exchanges.
Eventually it's down to my king, my queen, and two pawns versus her king, knight, and bishop.
My pawns are steadily inching towards the opposite side, I have stopped responding to her father and have shown that I am now focusing entirely on the match.
Her father is now silently watching the match, a serious expression on his face.
My queen takes her rook which was guarding the back lane, her knight takes my queen, I move a pawn one step forwards and promote it into a queen.
Sona bites her lip and moves her knight forwards.
My queen places her king in check from the side.
She moves it a step forwards, allowing me to promote my other pawn into a rook.
We both know that at this stage... it's practically over.
Queen takes knight, bishop tries to check my king, rook approaches bishop. Queen takes bishop, I lock her king in the corner.
"Checkmate." I state with a slow nod.
I hold up a hand for a handshake. "Good game. I was a bit rusty, but it looks like I pulled through in the end."
She looks to my hand then back to the chess board. "You... have no idea what you've just done... do you?"
"Hm?" I blink.
"Well." Sona's father mutters. "This is certainly surprising."
"Am I missing something here?" I question as I scratch the back of my head.
Lord Sitri continues. "You see, Lord Decarabia... much like most clan Heirs, Sona here was supposed to have had an arranged marriage. However. She got out of it by defeating her soon to be fiancé in a game of chess."
"Oh boy." I state with a half lidded expression.
"So, after that match, I made a stipulation to her marriage contract. The first eligible person that defeats her in chess, will marry her."
Sona has her head in her hands now as her father continues. "You have met the first requirement of besting Sona in chess, and you certainly meet the standards of a prime Fiancé. The union of our clans would grant many benefits to each of our houses."
"You do realize I already have a fiancée, right?" I dully question.
"Who said you can only have one?" The man asks with a small smile.
I open my mouth to respond, only to pause and close my mouth. "That is... fair... but I am good friends with Serafall, and I know her... er... habits... and I don't really want to strain my relationship with her."
"Hn." The older man lowly hums. "The fact remains that you did beat her in chess."
"It's her birthday, should we seriously be talking about this today? It's clearly making her uncomfortable."
"I suppose you are right... we will continue this another day. I will leave you two. I must go tell her mother the news."
Sona lets out a low groan.
He turns to leave, but I call out to him. "Lord Sitri."
He pauses for a moment and looks back.
"I respect you as a person and a business partner and I may be a little inexperienced in acting as the lord of the Decarabia-Malthus houses, however, I do know one thing... you have zero right to tell me what to do. Sona may be attractive, yet she is one of my only friends. If she does not see me in a romantic way... if she does not want to be engaged to me. Nothing you say or do will make that engagement go through."
Sona is staring at me with a not so subtle blush. It appears she isn't used to being called attractive when she's always stood next to Rias and Akeno.
I smile brightly, the menacing undertone and thinly veiled- friendly- threats evaporating completely. "Sorry if that's a little rude, I just don't like people telling me what to do. I hope that doesn't sour any of our future endeavors, though."
"…" Lord Sitri stares for a moment.
"I am starting to see how you get along with Serafall..." The man slowly states. "Simultaneously projecting an innocent child-like persona... and also being absolutely menacing. I'll certainly take your words under consideration."
I watch Lord Sitri leave and slowly look back over to Sona. "For the next part of your birthday present. You get one 'get out of engagement free' card from me. If you don't want to go through with it, by all means, everything will continue as if we never had this game of chess."
"Sidenote." I continue. "If you don't want to get engaged to people. Stop challenging them to fucking chess matches at random, Sona."
Her blush remains as she sheepishly scratches the back of her head. "Er... yeah... that's probably for the best. I just don't want to get rusty."
She lets out a sudden sigh. "As for the engagement... I made this bed... now I have to lay in it. If I don't marry you, my father will probably use it as an excuse to partner up with someone else... and, admittedly, I personally don't think I could do better than you."
"Who were you going to be engaged to before?"
"Zephyrdor Glasya-Labolas."
"Oh my god." I whisper.
Sona flinches.
"Er- sorry." I apologize sheepishly.
"No, no, it's quite alright. That was almost word for word my reaction when I found out." Sona waves off. "If it were anyone else, I don't think my father would have accepted the Chess clause. The contract with the Glasya-Labolas clan was formed before my birth, after all. Back when he was a child... and apparently, as he grew, that child irked my family more and more, but their hands were tied. They couldn't just abruptly back out of the deal after all."
"Rias' father did." I shrug. "But that was probably more along the lines of the Phenex family trying to order the Gremories around sort of thing. Zeoctus spotted the sinking ship, and bailed when he had the opportunity. I can respect that."
I slowly look around. "So... uh... where's your peerage?"
"They are around." She slowly states. "Tsubaki took the girls shopping. Our newest member needed some fancy clothes for devil society. They should be back at any time now."
"Ah." I note.
Sona falls silent and looks back down to the chess set as I make a quiet realization. "Oh. Ravel's gonna be so mad."
"I-I'm sorry." Sona meekly mutters.
