“Aye, Sury mentioned you’d be joining Daniel,” Pepper said warmly. “It’s good to meet you.”
“You know Sury?” Karden asked.
Pepper nodded. “She and I go way back.” He looked back to Daniel. “I’ll tell you all about it sometime over a pint.”
A short laugh barked from the doorway. “Dr. Kinnaird doesn’t need another three-hour, two-pint lunch,” Bradley sneered.
Pepper’s expression darkened. “I believe that was after I had worked all night to get you the results you needed,” he said in a low voice. “Better to work us all to death, then, eh Dr. Keller? Even if it costs you half your staff.”
Bradley’s eyes widened in a way that made Daniel think this was a side of Pepper he’d rarely seen. Daniel tried to hide a smile and leveled a look at Bradley. “Has there been trouble keeping staff?” he asked, adopting an official tone. Bradley stiffened in response.
“Turnover is expected on long-term projects,” he said dismissively.
