John looked to Sam and Nick. “We do have an out-clause on Dr. Guerrieri’s contract,” he said. “And I think shooting at someone constitutes grounds for firing,” he said with a slight smile.
“Drugged him, too,” mumbled Kar.
Glancing at Sam, John muttered, “Perhaps you should have found one more set of stairs for him to stumble down.” He turned back to Daniel. “Mr. Trace, I’d like to offer you a job. I can’t delay the chartered plane, but I can make arrangements for you to join us in a day or so. If you like, Nicky and Santo could accompany you.”
Before Daniel could respond, Nick waved a hand at Sam. “Uh, Mr. Calabrese?” said Sam. “I believe we will have to excuse ourselves from the trip as well.” John raised an eyebrow in question, and Sam added, “We’re…uh…starting a new phase of our relationship.”
John slapped him on the shoulder and said, “About damn time.” Leaning over, he added in a low voice, “If this really does kill his mother, I’ll pay for the funeral.”
