"Curiosity killed the cat." The sinister man raised the edges of his lips into a grin before injecting the girl's neck ruthlessly, leaving her unconscious. [Disclaimer: Rated 18 solely for the blood and gore scenes. Read at your own discretion.] **** Nancy Morgan was an average college girl who was bored of her little-to-none thrilling life and wanted something new. But what she got for that was not necessarily what she asked for. She got into a life-threatening accident. Roth Rogers, her family friend, inserted a chip inside her brain to save her. However, it attracted evil people to go after her. To protect her from the upcoming dangers, Roth appointed his adopted son, Samuel Rogers as her bodyguard. However, more than the people who were trying to abduct her for the cutting-edge technology, Nancy's curiosity rang for her bodyguard's mysterious life. Little did she know, her curiosity unlocked many secrets and troubles.... Like Immortality and artificial diseases. Trapped in a dilemma of science and immortality, Nancy must find out more about her bodyguard, and his connection with all of the mess. **** [Excerpt] "How come you have appeared at my house?" Samuel asked, ignoring her question. "And at such an hour? Are your parents aware?" He was bombarding questions at her after her system told her strange things. Nancy was irritated enough to break his neck, but she kept her composure. "Listen here, you little shit, the system is saying you're hurt. And that's what I asked you. Only I ask the questions here." Nancy clarified before jumping onto the bed, an inch apart from him, as she ran her hand from his shirt's collar to the first button. Who wears dress shirts in bed? Before Nancy could unbutton his shirt, he grabbed her hand with a frown on his face. "I do not know what your system told you, but I must clarify that I am not hurt," Samuel said before moving her hand aside. "Prove it, then," Nancy muttered. "The system says it's a thoracic injury. Show me that it's not." "Even if there is one, I believe you have nothing to do with it." Samuel backfired. Right. Nancy had nothing to do with his matters. But she was dying to remove that shirt from him. No, no! Not for any other business. She just needed to see if the gunshot wound was still there or not. "Which means there is a wound," Nancy said, trying to sound unfazed by his words. "I'll help you treat it." She stood up before walking over to the nightstand opposite them to get the first-aid kit. He watched her with narrowed vision, and she stared back from the corner of her eye. {Probability of survival : 50%... 60%... 65%} {The Wound shows signs of healing. Abnormalities detected.} {Platelet count: Normal.} {Platelet function: Faster than normal.} The system kept raising abnormalities from Samuel as if the system could've never guessed for such an existence. It made Nancy wonder, too. She was sure he was another invention. One way, or another… He was involved. [Note: All my novels are fictional. I had been working on this for 2 years but I couldn't get a name. My mom asked me about the plot and I told her that it was complicated; That's when she said 'Dilemma' If you like complicated things, this is for you! Thank you for giving this a shot.

Samuel Rogers; HER WHAT?!

Apparently, this young man in formal clothes, standing in front of Nancy was sent by Roth. He tried to explain it to Nancy, but she wasn't ready to believe it. She was scared at that very moment.

A man she had known as Roth's colleague since childhood just pulled a gun at her, how could she not have trust issues?

"P-Prove it!" Nancy said to the man, ignoring the halfway-informed police officer behind them as her attention stayed on the man. She was trying her best to not look scared.

The man blinked once, twice, before sighing. He put his hand in the inner pocket of his black coat, took his phone out, and made a call, putting it on speaker.

"Did you get her?" Roth could be heard from the phone.

"Yes, Sir. We are at the New York Police Department." The man's husky voice replied.

"Alright." Roth could be heard almost out of breath.

"Uhh… A man pointed a gun at you?" The police officer behind them on the desk requested an audience.

The man looked at Nancy for an answer.

She shook her head and took a deep breath.

"Okay so.. Roth should be here any minute now. There's this surgeon or whatever who tried to kidnap me or whatever." Nancy tried to explain.

But her speech was hard to understand.

The police officer looked at the man for an explanation instead.

"Pardon me, for I was not present at the scene." The man replied.

Nancy rolled her eyes and shrugged. The two were seated until the evident man appeared.

"What's your name?" She asked him as she shook her legs in nervousness.

"Samuel." He replied.

"Samuel what?"

"Samuel Rogers."

R-Rogers?!

Nancy looked away. Was it a cousin she had forgotten about? Or a distant relative?! No, no. Since he had the name, Rogers… He was supposed to be a family friend.

But, she had no memory of him.

Well, Roth was in the military. Of course, he might have subordinates too. Maybe Samuel was one of those subordinates. He was good-looking for a soldier, in Nancy's opinion.

Not that soldiers are not good-looking, but he was handsome. However, Nancy tried not to pay too much attention because he was still a stranger.

Surnames can be common for people. Maybe she hadn't forgotten him. Maybe it was the first time they had met.

Nonetheless, he was the 'awkward situation guy' from now on.

He didn't say a word to her, even while she was staring at him.

He had sharp features. He was pale but it didn't decrease his beauty in any way. His dark hair contrasted with his pale skin. And his dark eyes just added to the grimness which was unexpectedly beautiful. His most prominent feature was the mole under the left side of his lips.

Nancy shook her head. She had been staring at him for too long.

Soon, Roth arrived at the police station and gave his testimony. They weren't going to believe Nancy because she was a brain surgery survivor and her surgery was recent so memory malfunction was possible.

However, Roth's statement said otherwise.

The police contacted Sebastian and he agreed to show up for his testimony.

He appeared in just half an hour.

Why was he so confident? It made Nancy and Roth nervous.

The police officers asked him about the offense.

"I have an alibi." He simply answered. "I have not stepped out of my friend's house today."

He wrote down his friend's contact information.

"Nancy is a brain surgery survivor. Her surgery has not been long either." He eerily looked at Nancy, then his eyes spotted Samuel.

He narrowed his eyes.

"I have a business to tend to. Am I allowed to leave?"

The police officer nodded.

"Officer. You received my testimony too! If he has an alibi, Nancy does too!" Roth insisted as he watched Sebastian leave the station.

"It was not just an alibi Mr. Roth. The entire family held some sort of ceremony and Mr. Sebastian was witnessed present there by many. Your alibi, on the other hand, lacks evidence. I'm sorry but we can't file a report against innocent people."

They had no choice but to retreat. Roth knew it would be impossible to charge him for something as small as this matter.

"Let's go home," Roth muttered, following Samuel and asking Nancy to follow them as well.

Though she was annoyed in every possible way, she had to follow them as it was better than being alone and witnessing such an event again.

"Did you call Daniel?" Roth asked Samuel as they sat in the car.

Samuel started the engine.

"Yes, Sir. Uncle Daniel has been informed." Samuel replied.

'UNCLE?!' Nancy thought to herself. Oh no, he was a forgotten relative.

They arrived at Roth's house. His wife and daughter were away, so it was perfect.

Daniel was already there. He got up to hug Nancy as soon as she arrived.

"Are you alright?" Daniel asked.

"Huh? Ask that to your friend." Nancy said.

Daniel sighed as he sat down followed by Nancy. He suddenly noticed Samuel standing in the distance.

"Samuel? What are you doing there? Come here, sit with us." Daniel called him.

"Yes, uncle," Samuel said and sat down on the couch before them, beside Roth.

"About that, how did the interview go?" Roth asked.

Nancy and the thing that just happened was being ignored. Nancy opened her mouth and eyes wider than the Pacific Ocean as she was surprised. She blinked her eyes several times to get attention but in vain.

"The interview? They said they only hire Americans." Samuel said.

"You are American," Roth said.

"Yes, I told them. But the unknown birthplace in my resume made them reject me, I believe."

"Oh, that's great. I'll give you a job then."

Samuel shook his head.

"I want to do it myself, Sir." He politely refused.

"Please. I don't trust anyone else."

Roth then looked at Nancy making indescribable faces at him.

"I know, Nancy," Roth said.

Nancy instantly looked away.

"Samuel, you're going to be Nancy's bodyguard from today onwards," Roth stated.

Samuel's jaw almost dropped, but not to the statement but rather to Nancy's surprised reaction.

Nancy couldn't believe the awkward situation guy was going to be with her 24/7.

"Wait what?! I don't agree! You guys can't select a bodyguard for me without my consent!" Nancy objected.

"We didn't ask for your opinion because we knew you were going to reject it anyway." Daniel, her father, smiled at her sarcastically.

Not acceptable!

"Of course, I would deny! Why would I trust anyone Uncle Roth would suggest? I mean, Dad! I nearly got killed because of your so-called childhood friend's childhood colleague! I am done, okay? You saved me? Thanks. Did I ask for that, though? No! So, stay out of my damn way!" Nancy raged out. "Not to mention, this lab-rat stuff, me being an invention… What the hell?" She added, talking as rudely as she usually would.

"Nancy… Some things are for the adults to decide. And I would like you to bury this attitude somewhere." Daniel said.

"Dad! I am an adult too!" Nancy widened her eyes, showing more objection than ever. "I just explained to you that your friend did something to me and it's not alright. Why wouldn't you listen?!- "

"Maybe he wants you to understand, Miss," Samuel said.

"See? Samuel gets me!" Daniel said as he got close to Nancy supporting his body with his arms to slide towards her. "I understand where you're coming from, baby bird. That's why, we're having Samuel protect you. Because we care, and we understand."

Nancy looked away.

"Stop calling me that." She chose to leave the room. She went to the kitchen and gulped lots of water.

Daniel sighed and looked at Samuel.

"Are you up for the job then?" Daniel asked.

"I wanted to search for a job myself. However, the situation here has tempted me to try." Samuel replied.

"Roth, please give me parenting classes," Daniel asked as he chuckled.

Nancy's attitude was going places. Undesirable places.

It looked like Samuel had agreed to guard her. Nancy didn't like that. Now she felt like staying inside forever. She didn't know anything about him, and that was unsettling. A stranger was going to stay with her every time she went outside.

Everyone seemed to know him, though. Even Laura. She called him the best boy when she heard he'd be guarding Nancy. Sure, he was good-looking but really? Best boy? Nancy had to talk it out, of course.

But at least he wasn't someone she had forgotten as it was their first meeting.

Other than that, for Nancy, everything was chaos. Everything.

Hehe, Samuel is my best boy!!!
