Lets Keep It Straight

"Very well then." Zane replied as he pulled his phone out.

"What are you doing?" Rose asked, a flash of confusion passed over her face as mafioso began to mess with his phone.

"I'm checking to see if what you say is true or not?" He replied without taking his eyes off of his phone.

There was no reason for him to look at the business card again. He already knew who he needed to call to be able to tell if the woman was being honest with him or not.

He didn't like making such calls in public spaces but there was no sense in letting Rose go until he could confirm that what she was telling him was true or not. He knew that once she was out of his eyesight, it would be hard for him to get ahold of her again.

Rose wanted to protest what he was doing. This wasn't the place to be making such phone calls. There was no telling who might pick up on the conversation and create another problem that she didn't have the energy to deal with.

"Why don't you just call when we are done here?" She tried to suggest. Zane chose to ignore her however as the phone was already ringing. No sense in stopping now.

If he did and the other happened to be available, he would just end up calling him back anyways.

"The sooner things get taken care of, the better." He told her right before the person on the other end of the phone picked up.

"Diego speaking." The gruff voice on the other end of the phone replied.

"Diego, it is so good to hear your voice after such a long time. I hope that I am not reaching out to you at a bad time." The young mafioso greeted the person on the end of the phone rather warmly as though he was talking to an old friend that he hadn't heard from in a while.

"No, no nothing serious at all. There was just a little something that I wanted to check with you and hope that you could verify with me." He glanced over at Rose when he said this.

She looked rather annoyed but didn't seem nervous or uncomfortable as someone who was lying might have been. Perhaps her desire for him to not call right then and there wasn't born out of the fact that she had anything to hide from?

"Oh, you know that it is harder for me to stay out of trouble than it is for you." Zane laughed as the other man joked with him.

"Surprisingly though, this isn't about me for once. I am trying to find out if someone I'm here with right now is in any kind of trouble." He explained. This caused the other man to change his tone immediately.

"Indeed. I have a rather charming young woman here with me right now. Rather bold and beautiful. Makes for quite the interesting one to talk with you. She claims that she came around to talk with one of your clients the other day and I just want to see if that is true or not." Once he got to the real reason that he was calling, he lowered his voice to ensure that no one else would be able to overhear the phone call.

"Yes, I believe that one would be the person in question." He hummed in agreement. Normally he would have walked away from the table to create some distance between himself and the other people inside the café. However, with Rose being there he knew that he wouldn't be able to get away with that.

She would likely take the chance to disappear if he turned his back on her for one second. Instead, he had to opt for lowering his voice and speaking in less direct terms to get what he was asking across to his somewhat friend.

"Oh? So you can confirm for a fact that she was there?" Zane glanced over at Rose who hadn't shifted from her seat and maintained the same annoyed expression the entire time he had been on the phone.

"I already told you that I wasn't lying to you, didn't I?" Zane had hardly thanked the other and ended the call before Rose spoke up.

He was glad that Diego had hung up before he moved the phone away from his ear otherwise he might have ended up hearing the way that she was talking to the young mafioso.

"You did, but I am not the kind of person who believes someone by their word alone." He replied in the same cold tone of voice that he had been speaking to her in before as he set his phone on the table.

"Right now though it seems that everything is in your favor and that there is no evidence that you're lying to me. I would still like to know though what you were doing on that side of the city if it isn't a place that you normally frequent."

"I don't think what I chose to do in my daily life is of any concern to you." She replied in a rather defensive manner before finishing the rest of her coffee.

"Now that you have gotten the answer you're looking for, I don't think that there is any reason for us to be talking any longer." Rose told her as she reached her hand out to take her wallet back from the other.

"You have already taken up more of my time than I have to offer and there are other more important things that I need to do."

Once again though before her hand could make contact with the wallet, Zane snatched it up and moved it out of her reach and back into his jacket pocket.

"Eager to leave so quickly even though I haven't said if I'm done speaking with you yet or not." He tsked with a slight shake of his head.

"I think that I would prefer if you were to stay here and keep me company for a while longer." He told.

"No." She answered, shooting him down rather quickly.

"I have already answered all the questions you had for me about this matter. You have gotten the evidence that you were looking for to know that I'm not lying. Thus, I don't think that there is any other reason for us to stay here talking." Rose told him as she stood up from the table.

"If you're going to insist on keeping my things, I will just file a complaint against you. But let us keep it straight right now that I have no desire to have any kind of contact with you after this."

Zane found himself once again taken aback by the woman who was now standing across from him.
