Chapter 49

“I didn’t start seeing Paul again until after you and I had broken up,” I said. “I wasn’t cheating on you with him. I swear, Jared.”

“Did you break up with me to be with him?”

“No.”

Jared sat back against the headboard of the bed and was quiet for several seconds. I could see that he was mulling everything over and trying to figure out what to say next.

“How could you sleep with your mother’s boyfriend?” he finally asked.

“I’m a terrible person, I know. I never meant for her to find out and I never wanted to get in the way of their relationship. I just wanted a little of him for myself.”

“So, now what? Since he and your mother broke up, are you going to go back to him?”

“No. It’s over and done with.”

Jared’s eyes met mine. “Is it?”

“Yes.”

He didn’t look convinced.

“You hate me, don’t you?” I asked.

“I could never hate you. I’m just disappointed in you.”

“Well, that makes two of us.”
