Freya's concerns

A few reports started to show up about an unidentifiable wyvern showing up and leaving pink scales behind. alex's eyes shown when he heard these reports because he remembered that this was when the first subspecies started to show up. this particular subspecies was both high rank AND an alpha species since it was a pink rathian. 'if memory serves me right the coral highlands are the usual location for this tasty morsel' he thought as he left freya to head to the coral highlands. no one else seemed to notice it but freya was sure that alex knew the future because he seemed to always be a step ahead of her when events occur.

She mentioned this oddity to the fleet commander but he just shrugged it off and asked her whats new. at first she was stunned at how easily her concerns were dismissed but the fleet commander explained how obsidian was frankly impossible to understand. freya was told how when obsidian was first found as an egg he was small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. he went on to then list the changes obsidian had since that time in chronological order.

Freya was stunned at the sheer volume of differences between the start and the current obsidian. "but if he changes so much why hasn't he been studied?" she asked confused. the fleet commander shook his head "sid's a unique creature certainly worth study but we live with him so we know more about him than most of the monsters recorded. there simply is no need to force the issue since besides his biology we have whole tomes on him already. even if we didn't sid has been nothing but patient with us despite how many mistakes we've made." the fleet commander said honestly.

"The truth of the matter is that sid could grab those treasures of his and leave if he really wanted to and none of us could stop him. I'd wager the reason he stays is because he's perfectly content right where he is. i have known sid his entire life and he is just as smart as you or i so if you can figure out any other reason why he stays i'm all ears." the fleet commander said calmly. freya thought about it for a moment but she really couldn't find anything. food? there are better places nearby. shelter? he could probably make his own with his intelligence.

Obsidian obviously wasn't here for companionship since he was the only member of his race here or anywhere for that matter. freya had seen obsidian in action so she knew he could wipe them out with little effort so he obviously wasn't here to double cross them. it bothered her how unmonster like obsidian acted around everyone as if he was an entirely different thing than a huge powerful dragon. she had spent a decent amount of time observing obsidian as he accompanied her on her hunts so she had seen the recognition in his eyes at the stronger monsters that showed up.

Now she had seen him seemingly know exactly the vague reports of the strange wyvern were about and fly away in a straight line like he knew exactly where it could be found. before the second operation with zorah magdaros freya had seen obsidian acting normal right until the topic came up. at this time he suddenly became even fiercer looking like he had suddenly shifted into a subspecies of himself overnight. even crazier was how he had developed a new element out of seemingly nowhere along with a treasure that seemed to resonate with the others he had.

To a hunter like freya who had very sharp senses when it came to energy movement obsidians nest felt like it was overflowing with the stuff. the weirder part was that the energy didn't spill out of the nest despite there being no reason why it shouldn't. what freya was concerned about was that obsidian would grow into a force beyond their control and not even the swarm tactic used on the previous hostile sapient monsters would work. she wasn't hostile towards obsidian since he was very calm and even playful but as an experienced and talented hunter she was wary to trust a monster so fast.

Ok so i know this whole chapter was focused on freya rather than alex but that was because despite alex being the mc freya is super important. also i was trying out adding the pov of someone who didn't know alex from his hatching. this was to show how deeply the caution that most people would show alex if he just showed up somewhere in the old world before they got to really know him.
