Chapter 112

At dawn, Beverly woke up suddenly from her dream.

After waking, she found tears streaming down her cheeks, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't recall the dream.

"How strange? I never used to dream."

Beverly didn't show any signs of weakness. She remembered that today was her first day at the police station, so she quickly got up and began her morning routine.

Once she was ready, she changed into her brand-new uniform. The fit was perfect and professional, making her look sharp and strong.

Beverly twirled in front of the mirror a couple of times, then packed her things and headed out the door.

She still had to wait three months before she would get the privilege of having a designated driver and car, so today she had to drive her own vehicle to work. But on duty, she could hitch a ride with fellow officers.

To her surprise, just as she stepped outside, she saw Jackson. He had parked his car by the roadside and stood shivering by the passenger side door.

When he saw Beverly, his eyes lit up and he quickly opened the passenger door.

"Hey, Beverly, I'm heading the same way. Want to ride with me?"

Jackson's teeth were chattering, and his uniform was covered in dew, suggesting he had been waiting for quite some time.

And he wasn't really heading the same way — Jackson lived in the eastern suburbs of Midtown, so it must have taken him at least thirty minutes to drive here.

"Alright, thank you," Beverly accepted his offer and got into the passenger seat.

"You look great today. You could star in a recruitment video for the police force."

"Thanks," she replied.

As they drove off, Jackson started rambling about trivial topics, some of which were awkward and easy to misinterpret, but he didn't seem to realize it.

Beverly didn't mind. She just smiled politely. She understood Jackson's intentions, but he wasn't her type. Besides, she was already with Randy, and Randy had a decent relationship with Jackson.

"Jackson, you're a good guy. You should find someone more suited for you."

"Oh, I know I'm a good guy! Haha, I'm a good guy."

Jackson laughed, completely ignoring the underlying meaning of her words, which left Beverly a bit speechless.

Fortunately, her place was close to the Midtown police station, so they arrived shortly after.

Beverly was quick to get out of the car, hoping to walk home by herself later that evening.

Jackson followed her closely, not quite a gentlemanly protector, but more like a little sidekick.

Beverly was somewhat of a celebrity at the police station. As she walked in, many officers greeted her, which made her a little uncomfortable. But with the help of a female captain, she was soon led to the storage room to collect her equipment.

A well-prepared female officer soon emerged.

She was like a beautiful flower, drawing the attention of many in the station.

"With you joining, I bet their work efficiency is about to skyrocket," the captain said with a smile, then grumbled, "What's up with Brooke? How is it that the sheriff is arriving later than a new officer?"

In this town, the captain held a higher rank than the sheriff but worked more in a clerical role, unlike in larger cities.

Just as the captain finished speaking, the black sheriff, Brooke, rushed in, looking displeased.

"There's a situation at the entrance! That damn guy showed up with a dead pig!"

"What happened?" the captain asked.

"It's Dave from the pig farm down south. He claims someone killed his pig. He even gave the pig a name. What a weirdo! And instead of calling it in, he drags the dead pig to the station. Now there's blood all over the floor—disgusting."

Jackson, noticing Brooke's sour mood, tried to kiss up to him.

"Dead pigs aren't gross.there is an old saying that dead pigs don't fear boiling water. It means dead pigs are really tough, just like you, Sheriff!"

"Oh?"

Sheriff Brooke furrowed his brows, feeling unsure if that was a compliment, but lacking the cultural context, he just nodded, "Alright, sure, just like me."

"So, how should we handle this? Want me to go check it out?" Beverly asked, frowning. Her assigned area included the southern part of town, where Randy's school and the pig farm were located.

"No need. A pig isn't worth much, and it wasn't poisoned or anything. That pig is so big, it's already worth some money. I told the officers to send him away," Brooke said dismissively, before offering some advice to Beverly. "You've gotta remember, we're busy as cops. Stuff like this, it's not urgent, so we don't waste our time."

"The sheriff is right!" Jackson nodded eagerly in agreement.

But Beverly wasn't entirely convinced. Still, as a new officer on her first day, she didn't want to argue.

Even the captain didn't say much, only patting Beverly on the shoulder. "You're new here, but there will be plenty of work to do. This kind of thing really is just a minor issue."

After all, it was just a pig. It's not like it was a sparrow stuck on a high-voltage wire.

If a sparrow were stuck on a power line, that would be a different story. The police would have to report it to the White House, and then old Biden himself would order the entire national grid shut down to save that sparrow.

That's the humanity of America! A great nation that would halt everything for the smallest life, even if it means turning off the power!

Brooke chatted and laughed with the captain for a few more minutes before bringing Beverly to her new desk.

"This will be your workstation from now on, though we're mostly out on patrol. You can rest here during breaks. Oh, and the cafeteria is over there. I'll have Jackson show you around later."

Beverly nodded, just about to sit down when she heard commotion at the entrance, followed by exclamations from a few officers.

"What's going on?" Brooke asked, frowning.

One officer quickly reported, "Not sure, but it looks like there's some trouble at the front door."

Another officer added, "It's that weird guy who was blocking the door. Someone from the cafeteria took pity on him and offered to buy the pig to make pork chops and help him out, but he punched the guy, knocking out several teeth."

"What? He assaulted someone right at the police station entrance?" Brooke was furious.

"Yeah, and after hitting him, the guy just took off with the pig, saying he's going to find the culprit himself."

"Find the culprit? That damn Dave! It's just a pig, not a dog or a cat. Does he think someone should pay with their life for his pig?"

Brooke straightened his collar and turned to Beverly and Jackson. "The cafeteria can wait. Right now, we've got a job to do. Dave's pig farm is in our jurisdiction. Let's go teach him a lesson!"

Jackson snapped to attention, "Yes, sir!"

Beverly also responded, "Yes, sir," though she couldn't help but sigh inwardly. This whole situation could've been avoided with proper action. Even if it was just a pig, it was still someone's property, and the case should have been handled properly.

Isn't private property supposed to be sacred and inviolable in America?

Soon, Beverly and the team were fully geared up, with five cars and nine people heading toward the direction Dave had fled.

Oddly enough, despite him running on foot while carrying a pig that weighed several hundred pounds, they searched several streets but couldn't find him anywhere.

"Could he have escaped already?"

"No worries, I know who he is. Dave from the south pig farm. Let's just head to the farm and arrest him. He's got nowhere else to go!"

The police cars immediately changed course, heading straight for the pig farm in the south.
