Amusing (chapter 17)

Lucas watched as she slept,he had to admit that she looked peaceful and beautiful,he checked the time and sighed,he stood up and left.After some time Jennie woke up,she was still sleepy and tired,she was really hungry,she rubbed her belly,it was already 10:30 and it was late,this was the first time she had stayed at work this late,she wondered what could her boss be doing this late,she hoped he would dismiss her soon,she needed to get rest."When will the meeting be over?" she said within herself,she felt so tired and sleepy,when she goes home she won't be able to prepare diner she will have to sleep with an empty stomach,this was the price she had to pay for working as the CEO's secretary in a big company but she didn't complain.

Lucas pushed the door open slowly,he didn't want to wake her up,he didn't expect she would have woken up,when he saw her looking at him with a suprised look on her face he cleared his throat."I come in earlier you were asleep so I left" he explained,for someone reasons he felt embarrassed,Jennie looked at the paper bag he was carrying "I brought you diner,I know you're tired and won't be able to cook once you reach home" Jennie smiled at him "thanks sir but there is no need for that,are you done with the meeting?" she asked "yeah,I didn't expect the meeting to take long I forgot to dismiss you,this food is my way of apologising" he said.Jenne wanted to refuse but knew it will be futile,his boss was adamant, if she ate the food she will lose nothing infact she was hungry."Okay,thanks for the food then" Lucas placed the food on her table,she was suprised after seeing the food,it was her favourite creamy mushroom and spinach pasta,a smile appeared on her face,her eyes brightened."You like it?" Lucas asked,she nooded her head "yeah it's my favourite" she replied."I know" Jennie was surprised how did he know,he could guess what she was thinking "you told my grandfather it's your favourite I was there remember?" she smiled and nodded her head.Though it wasn't a big deal she felt touched by his gesture, at least he remembered to buy her the food she liked even though they weren't friends.

"Where is your food?" she asked,"don't worry I'm not hungry" he replied.She nooded her head,she wanted to ask If he was going to stay but before she could ask,Lucas sat on the coach and took out his phone.She knew he was going to stay so she didn't bother asking,she began eating her food she was so busy that she didn't notice him looking at her every now and then.She ate happily,Lucas didn't know that food could make one so happy,the way she ate her food one would think it was the best food in the world,he had bought the food in a near restaurant,the food wasn't expensive either.His curiousity about her increased,the first time he had seen her,he knew she wasn't that simple.Jennie was done with her food,she looked satisfied,"thank you sir for the food it was delicious" she thanked him."mmmh" Lucas replied he pretended to be busy with phone,"let's go I'll drive you home" he offered,she was shocked by his offer,what was wrong with her boss today,why did he became so generous she thought,maybe he is in a good mood.Lucas watched as Jennie was lost in thoughts,he had just offered to drive her home why did she see it as a big deal he thought.He smiled,she was really amusing,"it's already late so it will be hard to get a taxi,I'll drive you,it's dangerous to go home alone this late" he said.She didn't know how to refuse him,he had been generous by buying her diner taking her home would really be alot but he was her boss she didn't want to offend him so she agreed reluctantly.

Lucas drove her to her apartment,Jennie thanked him and went inside,Lucas drove to his villa,he didn't lie when he said he wasn't hungry,he took a shower and went to the balcony,he light up cigarette and began smoking deep in thoughts.He couldn't stop thinking about Jennie,there was something about her that made him feel restless,he wanted to approach her and befriend her but he didn't know how.When Jennie got into her apartment she took a shower and slept,that night she didn't have nightmares she slept soundly and peacefully.The next day as usual Jennie arrived at work early,Lucas come late,he called Jennie to her office and told her to make him a coffee,she obeyed and made one for him,but he kept on asking her to make more coffee by the time it was lunch time she had made more than ten cups of coffee,she grew concerned and wanted to ask if everything was fined but she feared overstepping his limits,Lucas knew that she was getting worried but how could he tell her he was feeling restless and coffee helped him to calm down.It was soon lunch break and everyone went to cafeteria to have their lunch,Jennie sat at the far corner of the cafeteria,her usual spot.She ordered her favourite, though it has been days since she began working at the company she didn't make friends,she would greet and talk to her co-workers but she remained professional.After everything she had gone through she had decided it's better to be alone,there were a few employees who were close to her.As she ate her food,a lady who had blonde hair,she was tall and skinny sat next to her."Hi" she greeted,"hi Anna " Jennie replied,Anna was in the management department,she was sweet and friendly,she was friends with almost every one in the company.She had helped Jennie alot to adapt,"have you heard the news" she asked.Jennie smiled Anna knew everything that happened in the company,she liked gossiping alot,Jennie knew other employees because of her,she told her about everyone.

Jennie shook her head,"I knew you wouldn't know,since you're always alone,it's Mrs Johnson's birthday you know her right?" she said happily."She is the HR" replied Jennie.Anna nodde her head "we are planning to suprise her so I hope you can come" ,Jennie wasn't interested so she shook her head "I'll be busy,so I can't come besides many of you will go so it won't make any difference if I don't go" she said."The reason why we want to celebrate her birthday together is because last month she lost her husband and kid in a car accident,though she seem to be fine we know she is all alone we want to cheer her up, hope you come,all of us are going so don't be left out, it's good if you interact with other employees too,it's not good to be always alone" she said.She ordered her food,they both ate while chatting.Anna did the most of the talking,she told her about Mrs Johnson's,She kept on persuading her,she promised to try and come,she decided if she got off work early she would go,she felt sorry for her.

Jennie was in her office going through some documents,it was almost 5:00pm,there was a knock on the door,it was Anna,she pushed the door opened and entered."What have you decided" Anna asked,"I'm still busy" she replied."If you don't want to come it's okay,you and the boss are the only one who won't be coming,you will be missing out alot" she said disappointed."Coming to where?" he asked,both Anna and Jennie were surprised,Lucas stood at the door looking at them,Anna had forgot to close the door so he heard them.Anna became nervous,"it's Mrs Johnson's birthday I was asking her if she could come to the party" she replied."Ooooh I see,if you have been invited I think you shouldn't refuse Mrs Louis, but why haven't I been invited?" he asked.Anna gulped,she didn't know what to say,they knew that their boss didn't like parties so it will be futile to invite him,even when they were celebrating after launching new products he only made a speech and left,that's why they didn't invite him.Anna kept quite "you can leave,you should attend the party it will help you have a good relationship with your co-workers,I'll also come have got nothing to do,also Mrs Johnson's is one of my best employees I should be there as her employer" he said.Anna nooded her head "yes sir",Lucas left,Anna let out a sigh of relief,"now you're free you should come it will be fun,let me go and tell the others that the boss will be coming" she said and left.Lucas cursed,he didn't know why he had said he will attend the birthday party,he never liked parties and also he was eavesdropping on their conversation,he let out a frustrated sigh why was I so impulsive he thought.
