After assuring Daniel he’d be back soon, Cole got up and crossed the room to Owen. “Hey, Owen, can I talk to you, like, out back or something?”
Owen barely lifted his head to answer. “About what?”
“Oh, y’know, things. C’mon.” When Owen didn’t get up, Cole crossed his arms. “I said c’mon, kiddo.”
That earned him a subtle glare from his younger brother. It also did the trick. Owen excused himself and followed Cole out the back door towards the beech tree.
A good distance from the house, Cole turned to face Owen. “Alright, now that we’re far enough away that any bickering won’t ruin the funeral, you’re gonna tell me why you’ve been treating me like I shouldn’t exist.”
“I haven’t,” Owen said defensively.
