Code Of Silence

[COMPLETED 4/15/22 - SHORT STORY] Olive's upbringing was an unfortunate yet successful one. Starting at a very young age, Olive Semone witnessed the most unpleasant of things. From murders and robberies to basic torture. Olive could not stand the violence but her father always said it was in her blood. That she would have to take his place when he meets his end. But Olive could never wrap her head around this. Leading the mafia part of the East side of Boston. Is this really the life she wanted? Carmine Vasquez had quite the opposite life. He lived in solitude growing up. He was never allowed to leave, never allowed to have company, and never allowed to go near windows. Carmine's parents were scared of everything beyond the window panes. Carmine grew sick of this and vowed to become strong and to protect his family so they could live without the fear of being hurt. On the day of his 18th birthday, he joined the Boston police academy. Trained hard and climbed the ranks fast. He never second guessed a decision or an arrest in his field. Well, that was until he met her.

"What exactly am I looking at?" I asked Chief. He handed me a picture of a woman. She was a beauty, No doubt. But what was I looking for?

"That is Olive Semone." My eyes widened.

"As in Lorenzo Semone?" I refused to believe this woman came from the Semone family. She didn't look capable of murder, but then again, who does?

"Yep. She is the new don of the East side." The Chief handed me a case file. I looked down at the manila colored folder. It was oddly small compared to all the files I've seen.

"I want you to figure out everything you can on her. She may be a bigger threat then Lorenzo." I nodded and waited for him to leave before opening the file.

It was just medical files. She was 19, a born and raised eastie. No information on her biological mother and all the info on her father we were already aware of.

No siblings and no relatives, weird for an Italian family.

I tried looking for a school transcript or any indication that she attended one, but as far as I could tell, she was homeschooled.

If im honest, her last name is the only interesting thing about her. She has no record, no license, no passport, no previous jobs, and no relationships that are documented.

I suppose the lack of information we had was why Chief Lancer wanted me to gather more.

"Richmond," I called over the railing. Our newest rookie, Caleb Richmond, was sitting at his desk scanning over papers.

"Yes sir?" He stood and faced me.

"You on duty?" I asked as I reached for my coat.

"Yes sir." Richmond nodded, "Great, get your shit. We have a stakeout to do."

I kept my eyes trained on the restaurant in front of us. About 17 minutes ago, Olive Semone went inside. What could only be her personal bodyguards escorted her inside. One of them, who was a little short compared to Olive herself, was carrying a briefcase.

No doubt there was a deal happening on the other side of those doors.

"Detective Vasquez, what exactly are we looking for?" Richmond asked. I didn't dare pry my eyes away from the doors, too afraid I might miss something.

"Did you read the case file?" I doubt he did. The noobies never did.

"I did but there wasn't much to read. She seems like a normal girl, so why are we watching her?" Had he never heard of the Semones?

"Are you from around here, Richmond?" I finally turned towards him.

"Uh, No, Sir. Born and raised in South Carolina." His face began to turn red.

"Semone is a very scary last name around here. They're one of the leading crime families in Boston." To explain everything Lorenzo Semone did would take weeks.

Apart of the police academy was learning not to show fear. It was basically beaten into us.

But Lorenzo? It was impossible not to show it. The man had committed countless murders and abductions and always managed to get away with it. He also imported millions of dollars worth of high end narcotics and we could never link it to him.

"Detective, Look." Richmond nodded towards the building and I quickly turned. Olive Semone was exiting with the same bodyguards she went in with. I couldn't help but look her up and down. Her dark brown, almost black hair, was pulled up into a tight ponytail.

It was nearly freezing temperatures and yet she was wearing a short mid-thigh length black dress.

She disappeared into one of the black sedans parked on the side alleyway. I began to start our car when another known crime family member, Timmothy Bianchi, exited as well. He had a smug look on his scumbag face.

"Whos that?" Richmond whispered as if they could hear us from across the street.

"Timmothy Bianchi. The Bianchis and Semones are in an alliance. Our informant found out that the Semone's pay the Bianchi's for high end ammunition and firearms." I reached into the glove compartment and pulled out a few more files, these ones slightly larger than Olive Semone's.

I handed them to Richmond and he immediately started skimming through them. I looked back towards the building and my eyes widened. Olive was now standing directly in front of Timmothy. A pistol, unsure of which kind, was held low at her side but aimed directly at his abdomen.

"Richmond, get ready to call in backup." I nodded towards the group of armed individuals.

"Really think she will shoot?" Richmond asked and I nodded. The Semones were ruthless.

I watched as Timmothy and Olive talked. I could tell Timmothy was afraid. His body language did a complete 180. That once smug look now turned into an anxious smile. I'm sure if I was close enough, I would see beads of sweat lining his forehead.

A few more minutes passed before Timmothy's guards slowly walked off and Timmothy was lead back to the black sedan.

By tomorrow morning, We would have a new body to investigate. And I would get to talk to Miss Semone and hopefully get some new information.
