The four of us looked at each other, trying to work out how and who would tell them that the man who had harmed Ash had now also broken in to steal a bank card.

The officers parked and walked up the driveway. Mateo got up and went to open the door for them. He talked to them for a while, explaining what had happened shortly and concretely. He then invited them in to take statements and evidence. Ashley went to get her laptop to download and show the officers and her parents what the home security camera had recorded. Her parents were surprised to see the footage but said nothing, even when Ash gave the name of the "suspect".
