Choosing second to come first

It begins a bit rough but improves as it progresses just due to it being my first work, the world as everyone knew it changed, John though refused to bend or bow, well others seemed to be corrupted and changed by there choices John kept his sanity, or rather had no sanity to hold onto as the voices in his head that others beside his best friend dismissed as imaginary become more prominent, as he sets out to make his mark he learns the nature of the changes to the world, finding out more and striving to get stronger and to kill the so called gods who where responsible for it, but everything comes at a cost. So just a small heads up, it starts a little rough but I can promise it Improves as the chapters go on, a bit slow but it's my first real novel so hope you all enjoy it :-) Ps. This story is writing itself, so all the twists and turns are by its own choice as I'm just the one putting it on digital paper as odd as that sounds, share a stone if you like it and I'll also try to keep as consistent as I can with updates.

Chapter 5: The Shadowed Game

Chapter 5: The Shadowed Game

"Suuup, how ya doing, mister ice cool and collected? I've got to say, you're taking everything better than I thought. Not the type of person I'd expect to get my class, but I rarely expect it to be taken," said the blob in a deep baritone voice that seemed to shake John to his core as it spoke.

"It seemed like the best choice—low key, neutral, overlooked, and powerful if used right. So, mind sharing the details with me about it now and what is really going on with my world?" John said to the blob, hoping for some answers.

"Wow, dude, seems you have a good head on your shoulders and a decent mind, along with that unnatural calmness. Probably the payoff for being rotund," the blob laughed, seemingly trying to waste time and get to John.

"Yeah yeah, I'm sorry I'm not some skinny air-headed high school girl with a high-pitched voice offering you 'filacio' like she does her teacher for better grades or a blonde police girl with big 'tiddies,' but rather a 31-year-old man who's a bit larger than usual and has read far too many novels than is healthy. Now, do you mind answering my questions?" John said to it with a biting tone and clear annoyance in his voice, causing it to blink at him for a few seconds before bursting into laughter.

"Bwahahahaha, oh god, that was good! I haven't laughed that hard since watching multi stars version of hellsong on that video site. Hahaha, oh, oh god, I feel like my sides are splitting, hahaha," the blob's eyes visibly tearing up and having fallen to the floor rolling around as it laughed, causing John to just sigh at how useless this being seemed to be.

Finally, with a few final wheezing laughs, the eye blob seems to float back up in front of John. "Okay okay, I really hope you live and survive. You seem like a really damn interesting human. The class, as you saw, is called 'Forever Second,' and due to that name, almost no one chooses it. After all, natural greed and drive are always to strive to be first, so who would want to be second? Well, this class keeps a person there forever. World's best smith? Practice a bit, and you will be the second best only, never able to take first and always lag behind them. It remains like that for anything and everything. In theory, it has growth potential, but it's a matter of reaching that point, and there are limitations. For starters, you would need to either learn something or know something related to the class you want to be second in. You can't just have every class instantly; rather, you will need to put some work in, not as much as most others, but enough to at least equal a level in it. So don't expect to pick up a bow and arrow and suddenly become the second greatest archer in the world. Next, to keep the place, you would need to refresh it through practice or use from time to time. I can't tell you how long the time between practice or use is, though; figure it out on your own. Most special classes can't be followed. An example would be if someone chose to be a necromancer. True, there is no doubt a bunch of such a class floating around, but you wouldn't be able to follow it due to it not being a class with any kind of ranking system. Kinda stupid, but it is how it is. Most combat classes, like a majority of swordsmen, though, would be ranked along with most magic users, production classes, and such. But again, you would need to work hard to gain at least 1 level in it and then try to practice it from time to time. Even if the level will automatically increase to keep you second, if you slip up and fall from second, it becomes 10 times harder to regain your second place ranking. It also doesn't add but multiplies, so it wouldn't be like 3 and 3 being 6 but rather being 9. Hmm, consider it being multiplication over addition, so you can imagine how difficult it becomes," it explains, leaving John in thought, just nodding his head as he listens and plans out what further steps he should take along with what classes and skills would be useful, practical but also easy to maintain.
