Chapter 4: Veil of Shadows
"Would any of you like to join me, or shall we part ways here and you heathens follow your own paths till you eventually fall before my lord's light?" Hana said in an overly sweet voice, calm as if she were talking about the weather.
"You do your own thing, psycho Barbie, and we will do our own thing. You aren't the only blessed one here. Our own gods gave us power as well and some tips and guidance, but let's call a truce for now, leave, and do our own thing. But once we meet again, I will burn you to cinders and ash worse than what you did to dog boy," Stacy said, walking out of the building and the rest following.
"Sigh, if only those filthy heathens opened their eyes, they would avoid so much pain later. Oh well, just means more fun later." Hana tried to seem disappointed, but her voice sounded practically pleased by their choice as she walked out as well. The jester then proceeded to turn to John.
"And what of you? Everyone else chose already, and it seems they got some guidance from it, but what of you? As I said before, I don't have all day, so choose already," the jester said, focusing on John, seeing him in thought.
"I will choose in a moment, but there is a lot to choose from, and I've seen enough anime, read enough novels and manga to know that jumping head first is a stupid thing to do. I do see one I want to take, but I just have a question first," John said, turning to the jester, who started to tap his foot, slowly growing impatient; it seems.
"If it's why they had an entirely different personality from before, I can't answer that. And if it's how their clothes changed, that's from choosing their class, and no, even though I am one of the game masters, I can't show favoritism, even if you seem interesting," the jester said as if already used to having those questions asked and just replying from a script at this point.
"No, no, I already know you can't show favor to one person or even small groups, else you would risk displeasing those higher powers or those above you and get harmed from it or worse. And anything I could get from you would need to be secret or when there aren't so many eyes on us like there currently are. And I know the personality thing is either from too much power all at once or the higher-level person overpowering and influencing them. No, I wanted to ask just three things. First, if there are conflicts between these higher beings like factions, a light side, dark side, good and evil, and so on. Secondly, if I do choose something, would I then learn all about the class, and lastly, would I be able to speak to the higher being who grants the class if it's something different from the norm, like the psycho girl? Also, I can understand you are rather busy; this entire region is no doubt something you need to manage, or rather, you need to manage the ones meant to keep things going, including quests and so on. You don't strike me as the type to be on the ground like this unless it's really major, like those dragons. You even said yourself it was meant to be baby dragons, and those were mothers," John replied to the jester calmly, getting a head tilt from the jester and practically feeling a smug smile.
"Well, now, what a clever little shit you are, and indeed you are correct. What gave it away? Also, I only took action due to the imps; those being the ones who are meant to be on the ground, keeping things running, and ensuring rewards are given, things happen, and if need be, changes made. You will probably meet one later if you're lucky. As for your questions, one, yes, there are various factions and sides, and they do tend to be in conflict, but there are neutrals that don't belong to any side and either bounce around or just keep to themselves. Two, yes and no, yes, you would learn details about the class you chose, but no, you wouldn't learn everything. For special classes, the god who supplied it would need to give you the finer details. I can't tell you why or say more than that. And for your final question, it's answered with what I said in the second part. You're able to talk to them for a total of five minutes upon picking your class and would then need to either fulfill some requirements or get lucky to talk to them again. And so you know, the more gods watching you, the better things can be. They can see the name of your choice, but nothing else, and they love the edgy-sounding stuff," the jester finished, staring intently at John, who nodded before pressing something on the panel in front of him.
"Then I want to choose this one," he said, causing a bright flash of light.
"Well, I didn't expect something like this. Almost no one chooses my offered class. I tend to just throw it out to be part of things," a deep voice resounded around John, who found himself in a brightly lit grey room. Weird decorations and paintings seemed to change every blink, the carpet under his feet feeling as if it wanted to reach up and drag him under, and weird statues that caused his eyes to hurt and a feeling of something clawing at his mind. Quickly turning away, he focused on a large shadow blob with a bloodshot eye in front of him.
"So, I take it you're the higher being whose class I chose," John said, staring back at the blob's eye.
