Expendable

"I am a hundred percent sure cannibalism doesn't make you a monster." Bruce said, "I knew a guy back in my old job... my point being that this is complete horseshit."

Bruce who was going to go along with his story stopped looking at Becky who looked at him as if her eyes were going to pop out any moment.

"Believe me, son, I've seen shit like these too, but the few pieces of evidence we gathered we can at least say for certain that they were once human." Gibbons said as he nodded at Becky once again as she fiddled through her tablet and the images in the screen changed, "Not only them but there's been a whole lot of things going on."

"Vampires, Werewolves, all these fantasy shit... each 'monster' with their own unique style of killing, characteristics, and patterns."

"But you lack evidence. No proof them existing or how they came to be." Bruce nodded watching the images of mutilated people. Something no weapon or human would be able to pull off with ease, and they didn't seem to be discriminatory either.

Elders, young, women, these monsters, or whatever they were didn't seem to have any uniform pattern, just wild erratic behaviors as far as he could see.

"That's correct. With how these monsters act, it was no surprise they were hard to pinpoint. After all, whenever we see shit like this our human brain tends to rationalize it into a category of something we already know. Missing people, random animal attacks, we've been lying to ourselves."

"But luckily for us, humans have the tendency to evolve. Though not physically, we still have our eyes every fucking where so as the days go by and the technology evolves, these monsters would no longer be in the dark. And you can guess, what will happen then."

"As any scared animal pushed back onto a wall would, they will fight back. The public will act like how it always does. Panic and chaos." Bruce answered,

"Exactly, so before the day comes we need to be prepared. Find what they are, how many different types of these sons of bitches are out there, their origin, and how to eradicate them. I want to know everything."

"Quick question, why would the government hand this operation to you?" Bruce said laying back as he had seen his fill for the day, "No disrespect but isn't it better for an army to do this than your group over here. That would be more quick and efficient wouldn't it?"

"Compromises." Gibbons answered, "When my project turned out well, I wanted to take it to the next level and this is the next level. This is highly classified intel that only a handful of people know about it. Now you're one of them. And as I said, our objective is not just killing them."

"You still didn't answer my question," Bruce said casually with a gleeful smile, not trying to play by the political rule instead he wanted to have some form of control.

The term 'the least you know the better it is' didn't mean shit if you were just going to end up a pawn. If he was going to die, he would at least die knowing what for. So even though he had a couple of guesses as to why, he still wanted to hear it from Gibbons's mouth.

"We're expendable." Gibbons said with an eye roll that didn't quite suit his scarred face, "As you can fucking see, we're not soldiers here. Not legitimate ones anyway. So they don't care as long as we get the job done and if we can't we will be replaced by someone who can."

"So you're outsourcing me a job that you were already outsourced to. Seems legit." Bruce shook his head, "Hunting Monsters, huh. Sure it can't be that simple."

"It isn't. You will still have to collect intel on them. Their behaviors, weaknesses, how we can kill them, and if possible capturing them alive. Though I say the last term loosely, it will be quite important to do so at one point or another." Gibbons said, "So as for your job, I have managed to secure a pretty good deal for you."

"Go on."

"You're now hereby a part of the Triple X division. A sub-group if you will. A sub-group created for the private mercenary organization, such as the one you're trying to build." Gibbons explained, "You're not part of the military and can't take authority over operations without consent. You won't be paid a determined salary nor would you hold any position and can be easily replaced by other organizations if your services are deemed unworthy."

"But with this, you get what you want, a proper and simple business. We give over missions to you and you get paid accordingly. Not only that, since everything I stand for has been turning against me, I also can hand you over missions other divisions and agency dump at us, so business all over for you. And you get to pick jobs you like."

"And if we reject too many we get replaced." Bruce nodded as this job seemed fair enough to see through.

You couldn't get more legit than being supported by a military division. With this, the money problem would be solved though he wasn't worried about it as there was a lot of ways he could make money but mainly the problem with getting quest would be much easier.

It was a step towards a good direction, even though it was clear that Triple X who have already been deemed expendable just handed jobs to them, indicating that Gibbons was just trying to look after his organization and he couldn't give a rat's ass about what happened to this subgroup which was no other than him now.

So he and his company were the truly expendable ones but this made things easier as there wasn't anything deeper to it. They do their job and if they die they get replaced.

Bruce had no intention of dying but he believed that this was the direction to go in, after all, his system seemed pretty useless when there were no mission or killing involved. The higher the risks, the higher the benefits were.
