Chapter 30

After returning from her maternal ancestral realm, Neo locked herself inside her bedroom all night until she eventually cried herself to sleep. From finding out she's a mermaid to finding out that her mother was once a human and now suddenly having a healthy body was too much.

"Dineo," Gladys said on the other side of the door. "We're worried, please open," she pleaded. Dineo ignored her. It was a beautiful morning out but nothing about it felt beautiful to Neo.

"Dee," June knocked.

"Buttercup," Jack said. Neo pressed her hands against her ears to block their voices out. She jumped up from the bed to go to the wardrobe. She shrugged the first sweater she saw over her shoulders before putting shoes on. The box where she used to put her monster drawings fell, and the drawing of the monster Jack didn't recognize met her eyes. She didn't pay much attention to it because she was in a hurry to get out of the house.
