Chapter 42

LEXI POV

"You've gotta eat something, babe," Mei says.

"I'm not really hungry…" I trail off.

"You still worried about you dad?" Travis asks.

Z stiffens. It's still a sore spot for us. There haven't been any visible changes, but the doctors say he's improving. I just wish I could believe them. Mum had shooed us back to classes and promised to update us if anything changes.

"Yeah," I say weakly.

'You could say that,' I think.

But what's really gnawing away at me is that it's my first day. Mum hadn't been joking when she said she'd arranged for me to transfer.

I'm relieved that everything's out in the open. I'm no longer angry about the secrets; with dad fighting for his life, it has really put things in perspective. While it feels that a huge weight has lifted off my shoulders, I can't shake the apprehension in the pit of my stomach.
