The winch turned, the steel cable tautened, and the metal "iron cage" squeaked and creaked as it descended. Darkness spread outside the cage, while dim, yellow gas lamps, embedded in the mine shaft's sidewalls, dispelled the deep darkness of the mine, bringing a limited yet essential sense of comfort.
Agatha stood at the edge of the lift, her "gaze" peering through the railing towards the shaft that extended downward. The night-like darkness covered her eyes, masking most of her facial expressions and leaving one almost unable to guess what she was thinking at that moment.
"It's so deep here..." A voice suddenly broke the silence in the lift. Alice stood nervously behind Duncan, looking up at the ascending gas lamps along the walls of the shaft and said with a bit of fear, "I feel like we're about to go through the City-State and drop into the sea..."
