16 - First mission [8]

"Alright. Then,

Who sent you here?"

The moment he asked that, the air seemed to freeze. My heart started beating harder, and only one thought was on my mind.

'He knows.'

"Tch."

And with that sound, the doors opened at the same time that Rachel got up from the chair and pulled out her gun. Quickly after that, gunshot sounds filled the whole floor.

It all happened so fast that I didn't have time to react, and when I finally looked back, what I saw were the bodies of the two guards that were earlier in front of the door, with blood. Looking more closely, I could also see the body of the receptionist. There was a lot of blood.

I started to feel nauseous, and my head became a little dizzy. I could see two bullet holes in the heads of the two bodies, blood still coming out. My dizziness only got worse.

"Oy! Take your gun!"

Suddenly, Rachel's voice was heard in the room, and I did as she said. I grabbed the gun from my waist and aimed it at Kyle. My hands were trembling, and the gun weighed more than I knew it should.

Added to all that, it didn't help that the person I was aiming at, was simply smiling without showing any sign of fear. Why was he so confident? Such questions kept my mind distracted from my objective.

My dizziness was at its worst, the room was spinning, and I could hear my heart beating so quickly it seemed like it was going to get out.

"Black, what are you doing?! Do it!"

'Black? Who was he? Oh, right, that was me.'

My head was in such a mess that I didn't even remember we were supposed to keep these identities even in these situations. My hands were shaking like crazy, making it very difficult to keep aiming at Kyle, who was still smiling.

Realizing that this wasn't going anywhere, I stopped and took a breath. Rachel was still looking at me as if signaling to me that she wasn't going to do anything. That I had to do it.

Determined, I moved my trembling hands to aim perfectly at the smiling figure in front of me. Slowly, I moved my finger toward the trigger. And at the moment I finally reached it, a sound was heard.

Ding-

The elevator's door opened, and in a fraction of a second, hundreds of thoughts ran through my mind.

'Could it be the reinforcements? The police?'

And when it was revealed what was behind those doors, the only thing I could do was let out a small sound.

"Ah..."

What was Richard doing here?

That question filled my mind, making me unable to think of something more.

Richard was looking toward here with an also blank face. I could see him looking slowly at the three bodies in front of the office, then all the blood, later passing through Rachel's figure, before finally focusing on me, pointing my gun at Kyle.

"Black, what is..."

He opened his mouth, but it was not long after that he closed it, maybe because he grasped the situation. I expected him to quickly press the elevator's button to go to other floor, and while that was supposed to be a problem, some part of me was okay with that. However, to my surprise, he started walking toward me.

"Black, I don't really know what is going on, but what I know, is that you should put down that gun."

I could only smile bitterly at those words that had the intention of stopping me from doing something I would regret.

"There is nothing I can do."

"Of course there is! You are very young, you have lots of opportunities. You-"

"Black."

Interrupting Richard's speech, Rachel's clear voice echoed throughout the whole floor.

"Do you remember one of the conditions for the mission to be considered to be completed? Since it seems like you don't, I will remember you.

There can't be any witnesses."

At that statement, my blood froze. I looked at Rachel, and what returned my gaze was her expressionless face. I wanted to ask why she brought up that topic in this situation, but even a 6-year-old kid could understand her intentions. She wanted me to kill Richard.

"R-Eve, is that the only option?!"

"It is."

With those cold words, I started trembling again. I could kill Kyle because he was my objective, and because I knew what things he had done, but Richard? At the thought of killing him, my heart felt as if someone squeezed it, and the memories of these last days flowed into my mind. Could I really kill this man? I don't think so.

"Boy, what are you waiting for?"

My thoughts were interrupted by someone I had forgotten was there. Kyle started speaking for the first time since all this started.

"You shouldn't doubt, after all, if you can't do this, how do you expect to kill me?"

"Shut up."

His speech was starting to piss me off, so I wanted him to stay silent, but once again, Rachel started talking again to me.

"Black. Do it. Now."

Her voice and her face were no longer empty, they were cold as ice. That made my heart beat faster and, whether I liked it or not, my hands along the gun moved to aim at Richard. At the realization of what was about to happen, I trembled a little again, but surprisingly, Richard wasn't trembling, and neither did he have a fearful look. Instead, he had his characteristic soft smile while looking me in the eyes.

"I hope that you can see your family again."

Bang-

After I pulled the trigger, Richard's body falling to the floor was the only thing I could see. A single tear fell out of my eye while looking at it. And then his voice was heard again.

"Haa, I can't believe it, you really did it! It's true that I'm not a saint, but killing a person who trusted you like t-"

Bang-

"I said. Shut up."

Now looking at the dead body of Kyle Beck, I lowered my gun, and stared at Rachel right in the eyes with the same empty eyes as she had earlier.

"Are you satisfied? Let's go…"

And while trying to ignore Richard's body, and the thousand needles that were piercing through my heart, I went towards the elevator.

Hi, author here!

How was it? Do you feel sad? Do you not? To be honest, I haven't liked writing this chapter for two reasons. The first one is because I killed Richard, and that kinda hurt. And the second one is that I don't like how I wrote the chapter, but I made it with my actual wrting abilities, so there is nothing I can do now. You can tell me in the comments what you thought about the chapter.

As always, if you see any mistakes, let me know. Thank you for reading, and I hope to see you in the next chapter!
