Chapter 68

The weeks were always the same. I’d fly into the city on a Wednesday, be picked up by someone from the orchestra, and brought to the hotel. I’d then be feted at one of the board of directors’ homes, or at some banquet. I’d spend Friday rehearsing with the orchestra and there was always something I’d be expected to attend on Friday night. Saturday night would be the concert, and I’d spend Sunday sleeping off all the after-concert parties.

I’d stay at that hotel for two more days because it would be cheaper and less if a drain on me than flying home to New York for a day before flying into the next town. So, Monday and Tuesday, I’d review what I was going to play the next week. I’d also diet for those two days so I’d fit into my gown, and if I had time, I’d go see a couple of interesting places in the city I was in. Wednesday, it would start all over again. It had been a long month.
