Chapter 56

“Breakfast.”

“I can make you breakfast.” But the words were slurred, and Jesse wasn’t convinced Gideon was even aware that he was talking. His eyes were still closed, his face still slack.

Jesse kissed Gideon’s forehead. “You sleep.” Gideon had only been home for about two hours, and Jesse was pretty sure he hadn’t slept at all the day before. “We’re just going to get some coffee.”

“Tell Emma good luck.”

“I will.” Jesse couldn’t resist another kiss. “Love you.”

Gideon was already almost unconscious again. “You, too.”

“You are making a mess,” Jesse observed as crumbs fell from Emma’s lips and down to the table.

She smiled sheepishly and dabbed the corner of her mouth with the napkin. “Did I get it?”

“No.” He leaned over the tiny table and wiped her full lip with his thumb. “Didn’t anybody ever teach you how to eat?”
