19 Chapter 19

They first go Pepper's house for her to change her clothes. Though instead of changing into proper office assistant clothes, she puts on a pajama.

She tilts her head when Pepper can see her. She doesn't need to talk to her for her to talk. "It's a bit late to go to the office. It's closed. I'm going to take a nap and then at first light we're going, I promise."

Okay, that sounds reasonable.

After all, it was almost two am when they went out of the party. Now it must be four or something. Still, in case Pepper wants to leave her inside her house, she won't fall asleep. She promised to protect her.

.

.

A couple hours later, Pepper takes her to her car, where she keeps pumping herself up into doing the mission. She keeps listening to the radio for any news. And sure enough, when they're close to the building, although there's nothing about Gulmira, yet yet they hear Rhodey's voice saying, "An unfortunate training exercise involving an F-22 Raptor occurred yesterday. I am pleased to report that the pilot was not injured. As for the unexpected turn of events on the ground in Gulmira, it is still unclear who or what intervened, but I can assure you that the United States government was not involved."

They park in the spot that says Ms. Potts, but don't go out of the car, choosing to hear it until the end.

When it's over, and they go out, she can see how tense Pepper is. She makes sure to brush her sides against her legs, though it doesn't seem to help much.

Soon, they're inside an office, with Pepper turning the computer on and looking at it. She hears her mumbling after a couple minutes about some Sector 16, but nothing else.

At least not until a voice comes through the tiny speaker. It's in another language, but she can recognize the harsh tone and the name 'Tony Stark'. Going on by Pepper's horrified gasp, it must be something serious.

"Oh my God," Pepper mumbles as Eva senses that sour feeling she gets whenever Obadiah is close.

She softly yips at Pepper. It attracts her attention, so she points to the door. Pepper clicks something and the video's audio stops. They hear steps coming closer, so Pepper quickly takes the drive out. Just in time for Obadiah to walk in.

"So, what are we going to do about this?" he says, as if continuing a conversation they were having. "I know what you're going through, Pepper. Tony. He always gets the good stuff, doesn't he? I was so happy when he came home. It was like we got him back from the dead." He sighs, almost dramatically. "Now I realize, well, Tony never really did come home, did he? He left a part of himself in that cave. It breaks my heart."

She now wants to break Obadiah's heart, though she can settle for his legs, too.

"Well, he's a complicated person. He's been through a lot." She clears her throat as she starts to move away, Eva following her steps. "I think he'll be all right."

"You are a very rare woman, Pepper. Tony doesn't know how lucky he is."

"Thank you." She points outside with the newspaper in her hand. "I'd better get back there."

"Is that today's paper?" Obadiah asks when Pepper is almost close to the door.

She's giving him her back, so Eva is the only one to see her lightly taking a breath in. "Yes."

"Do you mind if I take it for a while?"

Pepper turns around and gives it to him. "Not at all."

With a nod, Obadiah turns around to his desk. He waves a hand. "Take care."

They flee. However, when they are a couple of steps away from Obadiah's office, they meet Agent Coulson.

"Ms. Potts? We had an appointment. Did you forget about our appointment?"

Pepper is almost on the verge of a panic attack. Still, she grabs Coulson's arm and guides him forward. "Nope, right now. Come with me."

"Right now?"

"We're going to have it right now. Yeah, walk with me."

Agent Coulson looks dubious, but still nods. "Okay."

"I'm going to give you the meeting of your life," she mutters as they take the elevator. When the door closes, Pepper lets him go, her body sagging against the walls.

"Is everything okay, Miss Potts?"

She shakes her head. "No, it isn't. I just discovered someone sent the hit to take Tony out."

Coulson's placid smile disappears, his gaze turning sharper. "Care to explain. I'm one of the agents who is dealing with his disappearance, after all."

Pepper hesitates for a moment. However, she doesn't know she has her for protection, so she nods.

"We need to go to a secure place, first," she says when the elevator's doors open.

"Of course."

And so they follow Coulson, with Pepper talking as soon as they go out of the Stark building. They spent almost an hour doing so, with her glancing everywhere in case of any attacks. However, she stops when she doesn't hear Pepper's panicked voice.

"Tony? Tony, are you there? Hello?" Pepper says on the phone. She then stays silent for a second before putting the device away from her ear. She then looks at Coulson. "The call went through. However, it stopped midway. A horrible sound came in next."

Shit.

She remembers this part.

Ignoring them both, she runs.

"Eva? Eva!" she hears Pepper's voice yelling, but she doesn't care. She reaches a secluded enough place and transforms into Mew. Then she flies, wishing to be able to Teleport.

She will have to transform into another Pokemon soon. But now is not the time. Later.
