Teachers Don't Just Teach - 5sos medical

Fallon anxiously was playing with the strings of her jumper and played with her skateboard under her chair. She sat at the hall way waiting for Mister Clifford to call her in for her periodic 10 minute talk. During these talks parents get to know about the behaviour of their child in the classroom and how he or she is keeping up with everyone else.

Fallon sat there all alone since she lost her parents in a tragic car accident ten years ago, so when she was three.

Fallon was currently in her second year of secondary education and Michael was her head teacher for the upcoming two years.

Fallon heard a door going open and the soft and sweet voice of her teacher.

Alec, one of Fallon's worst nightmares, walked outside with his parents who didn't seem to pleased. Fallon looked weird into his direction but he huffed it away.

"Alright Fallon," Michael said as he held the door open for her, "go in then we'll talk."

Micheal noticed that Fallon was pretty stressed. He laid his hands on her shoulders and told her she had noting to worry about.

"Alright Fallon," Michael started when he sat down, "you have an amazing list do that's not what I'm going to talk about today yeah." Fallon softly and shyly nodded. She's never mastered the making eye contact thing.

"I only have you for like half a year but I feel there's something going on in that little mind of you that shouldn't be your concern at your age to be fair," Michael started, "Losing parents at the age of three in a traumatic car accident. Been placed in three different foster homes and been in six different adoption homes. That's really something Fallon."

Fallon led a tear slip. In these six months Michael has gotten her trust and she felt somewhat more safe around him.

"Hey what's wrong girl," Michael asked once he saw Fallon let a few tears flow.

"It's just," Fallon hesitates, "it's just I miss a lot of school because of my headaches and at my foster home they don't take it seriously you know and I feel so off recently like I'm not the Fallon I used to be in first grade."

Michael sadly looked at Fallon knowing what she meant. She had missed for like four months of the total of this school half a year, it even was a miracle if she was there at all.

"Yeah I miss you quite a lot during biology so tell me what kind of feeling off so you mean?"

"Like I have severe migraines day in day out for the past three months. I've been throwing up constantly and somehow I seem to zone out more and more. At nights I have a hard time falling asleep. But all by all it's nothing right?"

Michael was shocked. He noticed that when Fallon was around she would zone out or stop in the middle of a sentence not to continue ten seconds later from where she just paused.

"Alright Fallon," Michael said closing off, "since I'm running out of time I want to make a deal with you Yeah. If you come to my class after school on Monday we can talk more and than we'll see what we're going to do."

Fallon nodded and thanked Michael for being such a great teacher.

"Any time my girl," Michael said, "any time," Michael said with his hands in his hair and saw Fallon leaving on her skateboard when he called the next one in.

————————————————————

Fallon skated for three quarters before she reached her 'home'. She had to do it day in day out, even if it rained or snowed Fallon would always be found on a skateboard since she didn't have anything else to get around the city.

Once Fallon reaches the door she softly knocked because her home key was taken form her three months ago after being late by a minute.

"Alright look who we've got here," her foster parent spat at her face, "isn't that the cute little innocent Fallon."

Fallon sighed and walked passed a quite drunk Astrid.

"COME BACK YOU FUCKING SLUT," Astrid yelled at her. Fallon turned around and was faced with a woman who's blood of boiling to hurt Fallon.

"Where have you been?" Astrid asked her. "I told you that I had meetings at school," Fallon respondes tears welling up.

Fallon was always to be picked on. In every foster home and every adoption she went through, she just couldn't do anything right. Except for by the Salon family only they died a few years ago so Fallon was to be put in this foster home.

"Follow me," Astrid said waving Fallon over to the kitchen. Fallon knew what was going to happen next.

She walked after Astrid into the kitchen and rolled up her sleeve.

Astrid grabbed the boiler and boiled water whilst grabbing Fallon's arm which was actually still healing from the last water attack.

After a minute or so the water was boiled and Astrid forcefully pulled her arm above the sink.

Fallon gridded her teeth's together not to let any sound slip her mouth because she knew she would be severely punished for that.

Once Astrid's grip loosened, Fallon pulled her arm back and ran away towards her room.

She pulled her knees to her chest and cried into them. She wondered why she hadn't died in the crash instead of her parents, maybe that would've all been for the better.

Fallon dressed up into her pyjamas and slid under the blanket, even though it was freezing but she had nothing else so that tiny piece of fabric should warm her enough in order not to freeze to death.

————————————————————

It was Monday when Fallon got awake at a tremendous time. It was currently 4 a.m. and she had to wake up to do her chores in order to get away for the following punishments if she didn't. She woke up and her arm was twitching uncontrollably. Fallon could scared because it never happened.

When she wanted to stand straight a wave of nausea hit her and before she knew it she threw up violently on the floor. Her room mate woke up by the smell and ran away to get Astrid who was beyond furious.

"Alright," Astrid stated, "I've had enough of your crap. Get your things and leave."

Fallon looked shocked but felt too unwell to even protest. She grabbed everything that she had in a hurry, dressed up for school and forcefully closed the door behind her.

Fallon stepped outside and slid down on the pavement were she was crying. She was shivering of the pain in her head and most likely from the record temperature that Australia was having this week, it was going to freeze.

Fallon decided to keep up with some sleep. She skated for a good fifteen minutes and decided to sleep in an alley which was located pretty much next to the main beach of Australia.

Fallon somehow managed to fall asleep even with the amount of pain she was in.

A few hours later Michael woke up in his house as well. He knew he had an appointment today with Fallon and decided to talk about her with his best mates who turned out to be doctors. Ashton was head of trauma and the surgical department, Luke was head of ER and Calum was the on-call resident in their clinic.

Once his alarm went off Michael hit the snooze button on more time and turned around only then to be faced with a pissed of looking Ash.

"Michael," Ashton said crossing his arms, "if you want to be in time on school today I would get your ass out of bed as I speak. This is the sixth time you've with that snooze button today."

Michael turned around shocked by the news he just got told. On his alarm he saw that it was 7.45 a.m already which meant that within half an hour he should be present at school.

He grabbed his phone but found out that that one had only 6.45 a.m on it.

"Oww fuck off," Michael said laughing to Ashton who received a pillow to his head. "Why did you set the time on my alarm an hour later?" Michael wondered. "Well," Ashton said when he walked away, "because you wanted to talk to us and we're leaving within an hour and otherwise you wouldn't have come out of that bed."

That was true though. Michael was in a relationship with Ashton but more of the times it looked like he was married to his bed.

Michael started to dress up wondering about Fallon and more specifically about her health. Michael has graduated only last year as a biology teacher and already had a lot to worry about. He was headteacher of second years who were now almost all reaching the high point of puberty.

Some skipped lessons while others assaulted teachers. It was a non-ending list of difficulties and drama which was most to be presented by a few boys or girls. 10% of his class were down right devils and satanic leaving 60% being praised by other due to their work and 30% in the middle of both.

Michael stood in front of the mirror and did his hair and then walked downstairs.

"You wanted to talk to us," Luke asked while he just shoved another spoon full of cereal into his mouth.

"Yeah," Michael started and grabbed an apple, "it's about a girl in my tutor class I think she has a serious medical condition."

Luke nodded and just shoved another spoon into his mouth.

"What are her symptoms," he asked with his mouth full.

"Well," Michael held his hand through his hair, "she had missed for like four months of school already due to serious headaches, even that severe that she couldn't make it to school. She said that she throws up ten times a week as minimum, she has a hard time falling asleep. Also I noticed that she would stop sometimes in the middle of a sentence and than look like she's out of this place and won't respond to me and within ten seconds she finished the sentence from where she left off."

"She has a history of epilepsy to not?" Calum asked which made Michael shook his head.

Ashton and Calum both shared a worried look while Luke was already checking their agendas to see if they had time later today to check that girl out.

"Alright Michael," Ashton said, "how late are you both done with school?"

"I have her fourth period and I have my last lesson fifth and she probably eight period."

"Alright than I want you to wait for her till the eight period and take her with you to the hospital or her parents are going to collect her and drop her off," Ashton responded. Michael had to swallow due to the comment made by his fiancée.

"Don't bother about her parents. She lives in a foster home, her parents died when she was three so yeah."

Ashton, Luke and Calum grabbed their jackets because they were running late for their own shifts.

"We'll see you soon yeah," Calum told Michael while he scrawled through his hair. Michael laughed, got an apple and  got his bike out of the shed. He would pick up Fallon by car. He found he more refreshing to cycle than to use his car.

He closed the door and left for school.

Fallon was also making her way to school. She managed to fall asleep in the alley and got woken up by a young bloke who introduced himself as Maxi. He was a lifeguard and asked if Fallon was alright. Fallon looked at him and had hard time focusing on him.

"You alright girl," Maxi asked crouching down to get on eye level with Fallon.

Fallon shot up and skated away. She felt bad for Maxi though because he just wanted to help and Fallon turned it down harshly.

She could hear a faint 'wait' but she was just skating away from her problems.

She waited for the school ports and gathered every piece of energy she had and walked inside.

————————————————————

The bell rang once again and it was fourth period. Fallon had biology, one of the only subjects she did care about because she wanted to go to medschool after these six years.

"Hey," Michael said when Fallon walked in. He pulled her on her arm so she had to go with him.

"How are you feeling," Michael asked. Fallon looked at Michael and softly shook her head which was enough for Michael.

"I've been throwing up constantly. My head I killing me, I feel weird. My vision isn't what it should be and my arm started twitching like crazy this morning."

Michael sadly nodded and just wanted Fallon to be fine.

"Just call me when you don't feel like it anymore yeah. I'll take you after eight period to the hospital as promised."

Fallon just nodded and walked back towards her own table.

She opened her book and Michael started his lesson as usual.

Michael was halfway through his lesson when Fallon really started to feel weird. Fallon looked with panic in her eyes to the board but Michael stood at his back towards the class in order to write some things down.

Fallon her muscles were stiffening and suddenly she fell backwards with her chair she laid uncontrollably shaking on the floor.

Michael turned around when he heard some screams and yells from help. He didn't see why everybody was looking frightened until he followed their gaze. There, on the floor of his classroom, laid Fallon. She was having an uncontrolled fit.

"Alright," Michael said while he was processing everything, "you guys all leave. See this as a spare period and Alan give this to the gym teacher yeah." Michael scribbled something down on paper and Alan ran away.

Once everyone left the class still shocked and Michael crunched down by Fallon.

"Hey girl," Michael said as he stroke her hair.

Suddenly someone bursted through the door which made Michael look up.

"Oww god," Mike, the gym teacher said. Mike was a medic before he became a gym teacher.

"You call the ambulance Yeah," Mike crunched down by Fallon.

Michael nodded and called for the ambulance.

Mike was timing the seizure and rolled Fallon on her side. She made choking noises which even frightened Mike because he knew her airways weren't clear so he was faced with a dilema. If he kept Fallon on her side she wouldn't suffocate on her own vomit but if he kept her like this her seizure would only be getting longer and longer.

"There coming," Michael said. He was devastated and sat on the table watching Mike who was helping Fallon the best he could.

"Fuck," Mike suddenly yelled. Fallon's lips were turning blue and on top of it all she was vomiting by now.

"Michael please help," Mike said getting tears in his eyes. True he used to be a medic and he'd seen worse than this but he knew Fallon as well and without equipment he was just as powerless as Michael.

Suddenly Michael heard familiar footsteps running down the hallway. No too much later Calum stood in the door opening.

"OMG Michael," Calum started, "I think that Ashton asked to bring her in but I don't think that he had this in mind."

Mike made way for Calum and the other paramedic and stood beside Michael. Both boys were completely unwell about this event and it got worse when Fallon didn't stop shaking and kept throwing up.

"So she's like this for like," Calum said as he watched the clock on the wall, "ten minutes tops." Calum sighed and pushed another round of Lorazepam into her system. It was most likely to reduce seizures with an epilepsy underlying cause but when Fallon didn't stop convulsing Calum shared a sad look with Mike and Michael which gave both men a mental breakdown.

"I'm calling us in yeah," Mike said to Michael, "and we'll go together to the hospital." Michael nodded at the offer made and started biting his nails.

Calum saw that Michael was anxious and pulled him into a hug.

"I'll call Ash and Luke on the way yeah so they are clear of duty for her."

Suddenly Fallon had stopped shaking which made Calum let out a sigh of relief.

"Let's roll her," Calum refered to his female colleague Tess.

"3.2.1." When Calum was done counting Fallon was rolled back on her back.

"Alright Tess I want a intubation kit," Calum instructed while he let out his hand and got the things he requested.

"Fuck she dislocated her jaw," Calum said as he had a hard time moving the intubation tube into Fallon's mouth.

"Michael did she fell on her face." Michael nodded and Calum pulled his hand into Fallon's mouth. He forcefully pulled the two joints back in place which gave a disgusting sound.

Michaels stomach flipped and he ran out to throw up in the toilet.

"This will do it for now," Calum said as he steadied everything and got Fallon packed on a gurney.

"Let's move," Tess said. On the hallway they ran into Mike and Michael who were walking towards the exit as well.

"I'll meet you there," Michael said as he slid his hand over Fallon's shoulder and watched with Mike how Fallon got loaded in the back of the ambulance.

————————————————————

"Eta of 7," Tess screamed from the front of the ambulance when she started the ambulance.

Calum sat in the back and hooked up some machines when Fallon suddenly started to stir and her stats were going crazy.

Her eyes shot open with panic and Calum quickly hushed her.

"Hey Fal," he said taking the tape of the intubation tube off, "calm down Yeah. I'll take it off."

Calum slowly pulled the tube out of her mouth and Fallon covered her mouth with her hand which indicated for Calum that she was about to throw up.

Calum quickly pulled a spit bucket under her chin and a split second later she was throwing up.

"Are You alright," Calum wondered once she was done. Fallon laid back and started to cry.

"Hey Hey What is it?" Calum said taking an oxygen mask which he was about to place on her mouth.

"I'm don't feel good," Fallon softly spoke.

"What do you feel," Calum wondered taking her pulse.

"Like someone constantly stabs a knife in my head. I have trouble seeing, my left arm -which was under the blanket so Calum couldn't see it- keeps twitching. I really fell off please believe me."

Calum nodded and shoved the blanket aside from her arm. He saw an abnormal twitching of her muscles which he'd seen three times before and all three of them turned out to have a brain tumour. Mate he wanted to have a misdiagnosis in his head this moment .

"We're here Cal," Tess said as she stopped the ambulance for the entrance. She opened the back doors and saw a devastated Calum in the back and a conscious Fallon who was in visible pain.

Calum got the back of the stretcher and grabbed the IV with him while Tess puled the breaks off and got the gurney out of the back of the ambulance.

"Alright," Calum started while he hung back the IV and placed Fallon on a hospital bed, "12 year old Fallon Stalles. Grandmal seizure at the scene for 12 minutes and 35 seconds. Complains of a headache, keeps throwing up and has blurry vision. Intubation on the way but regained consciousness so intubation not needed anymore. I had to replace her jaw to get the intubation in. 30cc of Lorazepam on the way as well as 20cc prednisone. Bp 58/27 and pulse 102."

Luke and Ashton who stood aside took notes and nodded when Calum finished the part he had to do.

Luke began to set up some things to get her Bp higher.

"Ash," Calum softly said, "you need to see this." When Fallon looked at Luke, who stood on her right hand side, Calum pulled the blanket of her left arm which was still twitching.

Ashton sadly sighed because he knew about this abnormal twitches.

"Order MRI Calum," Ashton said as he was booking an OR.

"Luke," Ashton said while he waved his colleague towards him. "Yeah What is it?"

"We think she has a brain tumor and I think I've to preform an awake craniotom," Ashton explained.

"You're not doing an awake craniotomy on her Ash. She's just a child," Luke was devastated because he knew Fallon couldn't handle to be awake the whole progress.

"We'll see but if it's too close to her moving area she stays awake and you keep her distracted," Ashton sissed as he walked back.

"Alright Fal were going to wheel you to the MRI and you'll be getting results within ten minutes," Luke explained as he pulled the breaks off.

Calum just returned and nodded his head that the MRI was ready for her.

"I'm scared," she softly spoke. Ashton looked at her and gave a sympathetic smile.

"I would be too," Ashton said while he grabbed hand.

"You're going in a machine that will give us some time to examine your brain and then we'll go and discuss and tell you what we're going to do next. Sounds good to you?" Calum asked taking the responsibility on him to talk Fallon through this.

Fallon tiredly nodded and let it all happen.

"I'm going to place this on your head," Calum said while holding up a pair of headphones, "and you need to lay really still for us alright?"

Fallon nodded and Calum lifted her onto the gurney of the MRI. This was the first time that her left arm wasn't covered so Luke also saw the abnormal twitching of it. Luke's face got fixed and showed the worst emotion a doctor could show his patient. Fear.

————————————————————

"Alright we'll be back within 15 minutes oke?" Luke said as he laid Fallon back on her stretcher.

Mike -who got in with Michael- thanked Luke and gave Fallon a smile of sympathy.

"Did you hear what their possible diagnosis was?" Michael asked Mike. He shook his head. "Brain tumor with awake craniotomy." Mike had to swallow at this. He was Fallon's PE teacher and knew Fallon always wanted to do her best even though he only saw her 5 times in this whole year that she could participate because other times she was way too weak or she just wasn't there at all.

Mike wanted to know more but then Calum, Ashton and Luke walked in all looking not too happy.

"Alright Fallon this isn't going to be easy but we have to do it," Ashton said while tears welled up in his eyes, "you do have a brain tumour but it's operable. We want to do a surgery on you while you're awake but you won't feel a thing. There are some risks ofcourse but we try to minimalise those as far as we can. The tumour is where you're moving area is so that's why you have such twitches in your arm. Luke and Calum will stay there all the time to distract you alright."

Fallon just nodded. It was too much in one time.

"We'll take you up for surgery now but I'll give you some anestesia first so you might feel a bit groggy but you won't feel anything that Ash is going to do to you," Luke reassured.

Calum has led Mike and Michael back to the family waiting room and told them he would be getting them back with four hours.

Both men nodded and sat down waiting for the final call.

Calum walked back to the OR and saw Ashton shaving Fallon's hair. He sighed and placed a mouthpiece on his mouth before entering.

"Hey Fal," Calum said as he sat down on the other end of the bed so she could see him.

Calum nodded to Ashton which meant he could start the procedure.

"Alright lets talk about you Fal," Calum suggested.

"Alright," she started off hesitated, "I'm Fallon and I'm 13 years. I lost my parents at the age of three and have been moving in and out of foster and adoption homes. My only hobby is skateboarding."

"Alright were do you live now?" Calum wondered.

"Right now on the streets. Astrid kicked me out today since I threw up again."

Suddenly Fallon her arm started twitching like a mad man which made Calum look to Ash.

"Yeah sorry got the wrong spot but it'll be out soon no problem."

Fallon continues to talk about herself the three remaining hours and after Ashton got it all out he stitched her back up and wheeled her to her room for her upcoming week.

————————————————————

"Dad I really wanna go outside," Fallon wines to Ashton. Ashton and Michael decided to adopt Fallon the moment she got out of surgery.

"Fell off?" Ashton asked still being her doctor. She pulled some tricks with her head and neck which made her free to go
