17 Sometimes I Lie For My Own Good- 5sos medical

*cough* *cough* "You alright Cal," Ashton asked his former colleague when he saw him bend foreword and started coughing again.

Calum has been coughing for like two days straight already but tried to hide it for his medical colleagues.

"Yeah just coming down with a cold I guess," Calum answered his concerned friend. Ashton nodded and left the subject in order to talk about their sisters.

"She's in her second year right Loran?" Ashton asked Calum.

"Yeah but I don't even know for sure what she's studying. She says she's busy getting a teacher degree but I've never seen any reports or went to any meetings so I doubt that she really is doing that."

Ashton knew what Calum meant. Loran had told her brother - Calum - that she would be getting a teacher degree but she's not even close to get one.

Calum was a doctor and got enrolled into the program because he did went to university. Loran didn't So her way of getting into the course would be very difficult.

Due to Ashton, Loran got the change to prove herself and was now a second year student in medschool and walked her internship in a different hospital.

"Yeah Darcy says she's a great teacher," Ashton told Calum. Darcy was Ashton's eight year old sister so it would've made some sense for this.

"Alright alright if you say so," Calum answered laughing while he went into a different ER room then his colleague.

"And you're of to go," Calum said while he finished the plaster on a little boys leg.

He had fallen down a tree while playing with his mates. He sat down on the table with a lollipop and his whole leg put in a cast.

"And don't fall out of trees yeah," Calum jokely told the boy who gratefully had to laugh at it and nodded as response while his older sister put him in a wheelchair.

"Thank you doctor Hood," the boy said while being wheeled by his sister.

Calum gave the boy a smile before going back to the staff room where he just had his annoying cough again. He knew that he had to be checked out because it could be the pre phase of asthma or even worse than that.

———————————————————

"Alright people," Calum mentioned while he grabbed his jacket from the chair, "I'm calling it a day. I'll see you all tomorrow and have a great evening."

When Calum wanted to start his car he had to stop since his coughing began to show up. Calum knee he was more vital of getting an infection since his immune system wasn't the best in the world.

Calum also found it suddenly hard to breath but decided to head home in case Loran would get worried.

"I'm home," Calum screamed through the house while he grew his keys on the table in the hallway. He didn't get a response from Loran at all since she was in the kitchen dancing and cooking.

"Smells quite burned," Calum said as he walked into the kitchen.

Loran got scared by the sudden sound of her brother since she didn't hear him entering their house in the first place.

"Yeah I tried to make spaghetti," Loran said laughing, "but I guess I forgot the water before I started boiling it." Calum laughed at his sister who had the best intentions but they somehow didn't work out.

"Alright I'll get Nando's," Calum gave in before Loran could even ask for it. Loran threw her hands into the air.

"You're my best brother," Loran screamed while she threw her arms around Calum's neck.

"Yeah," Calum giggled while untangling himself from his sisters quite chocking hug, "And you're only brother to be fair."

Loran had to laugh at it and poured herself in another glass of water.

"I'll leave then," Calum mentioned when he pulled the door after him.

———————————————————

"I'm ho-," Calum stopped in the middle of his sentence since he heard too familiar sounds coming from the living. He ran with two bags of Nando's to the living room where he got faced once again with the disability of his little sister. Loran was seizing. True she had epilepsy and true that Calum was a medic and he was faced with multiple seizures day in day out but he still wasn't used by the once Loran had.

"Hey girl I'm with you Yeah," Calum softly said while rolling Loran to her side.

After a dreadful three minutes Loran her uncontrolled spasm stopped. "Hey I'm with you yeah. I'll be here al the time." Calum placed a soft kiss on Loran her head and got once again his own dry coughing. While Calum was in a coughing fit he didn't seem to notice that Loran began to seize again.

The deal with Loran was that when she had two seizures after one another without recovery time that she had to go to the hospital only Calum knew that she would kill him if he did.

"Alright Lor, if you have this seizure for longer than a minute I'm taking you to the hospital," Calum said to his sister who was now drooling on the floor and still shaking. Calum got his shoes on but than suddenly Loran had stopped seizing.

Within a split second Calum stood next to her.

"Don't worry love I'm here Yeah." Loran slowly began to come around to much relief of Calum.

Once Loran fully regained consciousness she hid her body in Calum his arms.

"Shhh you'll be fine I promise," Calum hushed her.

Loran nodded, too tired to speak or to do something else.

"Alright," Calum said while lifting her up and laying her on the couch, "I'll set up the Nando's and then we will watch a move or so. Is that alright with you."

Loran nodded and sat straight to look her brother into his eyes.

"I love you," Loran softly spoke. Calum kisses her forehead and got himself settled as well

——————————————————

"Cal you alright?" Loran asked. It was three hours after Calum got home with Nando's and the pair of them were just finishing up the movie.

Calum got stuck in his coughing fit once again and covered his mouth with his hands and keeps coughing for a good seven minutes.

"Cal," Loran says quite scared, "what's wrong." Calum couldn't respond and when he finished his coughing he laid down on the couch gasping for air.

"Cal I'm worried," Loran said now close to crying.

She felt her brother pulse and it was racing. Not only once his pulse racing, his skin was cold and clammy and when she turned his hand where he coughed in towards her she saw a quite pink substance covering her brothers hand.

Calum was now at the point that he was too tired to even talk or argue with his sister when she picked him up.

"Cal I'm taking you to the hospital yeah," Loran informed her brother. Calum's lips started turning blue but his breathing was regularly and a bit slow. Calum was getting back to reality only when Loran set him inside her car (I know you can't get a drivers license with Epilepsy but let's just forget about that...)

"Loran what are you doing," Calum whispered in the car.

"Taking you to the hospital because I'm worried about your health."

Calum just nodded and was still wheezing for air.

20 minutes later Loran turned into the parking lot of the hospital, the hospital where Loran was walking her internship.

———————————————————

"Dr Hood," Dr Howack said while he walked into the room where Calum laid and Loran sat aside, "you shouldn't be walking rounds for in like five hours so what brings you here?"

Calum looked like he saw water burn. He was 200% sure he didn't work in this hospital so why on earth would he walk rounds here. He wanted to ask but his sister already responded.

"My brother," Loran softly spoke up, "I think he has an acute pulmonary oedema. He has all the symptoms so I'm really scared."

"Wait What," Calum interrupted, "what's going on?"

"Well let's say I wanted to make you proud and I started med school two years ago. Ashton enrolled me in the program and now I'm walking my internship here for about half a year now."

Calum was stunned by what he heard. His sister wanted to make him proud and started med school for him.

Calum wanted to say something again but his coughing started up again.

"Alright order a CT and cat scan and order a full blood test as well as an echo of his lungs," dr Howack ordered to some nurses who stood aside. They all nodded and left of.

"Alright Calum," De Howack said while he hooked up some machines to Calum's chest, "we're taking care of you Yeah."

Calum nodded and grabbed Loran her hand because he was scared to hell.

"Lor," Calum softly spoke, "could you call the boys?" Loran nodded at the request made by Calum.

"Alright we're leaving," Dr Howack informed Calum while he pulled the breaks from the bed and pushed him down the hallway until he was out of sight for Loran.

Loran said in the waiting room waiting for the news on her brother.

She than remembered what Calum asked her just before Dr Howack rolled him down the hallway. She got her phone out and decided to dial Ashton's number since she felt closer to him than to the other boys.

"Hey Lor what's wrong girl," Ashton said not thrusting it. "It's Cal," Loran said now sobbing.

"I'm coming right now," Ashton said while Loran could hear that he jumped out of bed and dressed himself up, "you're at your hospital right?"

"Yeah I am." Loran could see dr Howack walking towards her. "I need to hang up now," Loran informed, "I'll see you soon yeah." With that said Loran hung up the phone and followed Dr Howack back into the room where Calum laid. Calum had a oxygen mask covering his mouth and was really tired as Loran could tell from his face.

"Alright Loran," Dr Howack said when he pulled her aside, "it looks like you were right about his pulmonary oedema only is my biggest concern right now that it is a cariogenic pulmonary oedema so I'll be back in like ten minutes and than we'll set up the right treatment alright?" Loran nodded but was shocked when he mentioned that it might be a cariogenic pulmonary oedema.

Loran decided to head back to the room where Calum was currently sleeping. Loran glanced at his stats which where extremely low. She wanted to sit down again and grab his hand when suddenly an out of breath Ashton came running into the room.

His eyes were bloodshot and he looked like he had been crying for a while.

Loran shot up and ran into Ashton's arms and cried. "What do they think," Ashton softly asked Loran. "Cariogenic pulmonary oedema," Loran cried.

Ashton knew it was wrong and it could be turning fatal within minutes.

Meanwhile Ashton was conforming Loran, Dr Howack came walking back in.

"Loran," Dr Howack said soft, "your brother has indeed an acute cariogenic pulmonary oedema. Because it way more severe than I thought we need to prep him ASAP for surgery. I'm placing a pacemaker because his heart is giving up on him.

I'll put him on the transfer list for a new heart so the pacemaker is more like an in between solution until he's getting a new heart."

Loran cried and Ashton couldn't hold his tears back either, his best mate was actually dying right underneath his nose.

"I'll prep him for surgery within ten minutes so I'll be leaving you for now and I'll be back soon he."

Loran and Ashton just nodded not in the mood even to talk or thank Dr Howack.

Calum was slowly coming around and saw his best mate and his little sis crying so he knew there should be something terrible wrong.

"Hey," Ashton said when he noticed that Calum was awake, "how are you feeling?"

"Tired but okay," Calum respondes. Loran decided that it was her call to tell Calum what he's faced with.

"Cal," she started of sitting on her brothers bed, "you've an acute cariogenic pulmonary oedema. Dr Howack will collect you soon for surgery. Your heart isn't working great anymore so you'll be put on a transplant list but for now you'll be getting a pacemaker."

Calum cried and with that Dr Howack returned. "Let's get started shall we."

———————————————————

6 year later

"Yeah I'll tell him," Loran said when she hung up.

"Calum come down for a sec," Loran yelled through her own house. Calum came down with his nephew, Loran's three year old son John, on his hip.

"What is it," he said while bouncing John on his hip.

"You're getting a new heart."

All three of them fell in each other's arms and cried out of excitement.
