Ch:01 Second Siege of Versailles - 0

As soon as I open my eyes, all I see is mud,a dirty black liquid filled with corpses and thick crimson blood flowing from dead bodies of fallen allies and enemies alike. When I close them, I can hear the screams of the living, sharp voice of gunshots, blasts from artillery and their shouts. They aren't human, they are wretched beings who have come back from the dead. Some say they are created by our enemies who in a last ditch effort tried to experiment on humans and create their saviors. In a cruel irony of fate, these so called saviors were the first ones to destroy their country and people. While some say that these were created by God to end mankind, like the great flood of old. As crazy as it sounds, that may be true, since all this madness started when some rocks fell from the sky.

At first there was confusion, the governments were down, apparently most of the higher ups were killed by the fall of the rocks. Then reports of people coming back from the dead and killing others spread like wildfire. Many called them ghouls or the living corpses. The army which was already fighting a war couldn't spend more resources for some strange unconfirmed rumors. Then the enemies started behaving strangely. They didn't seem to care about their lives and ran straight for us through no man's land without their weapons. They started biting and eating us,trying to tear our flesh from our bodies. This led to the first siege of Versailles, which we won through sheer luck and good defensive positions. Then the higher ups told us to attack them through no man's land. With hindsight, I can say that it was the stupidest decision which was probably made because everyone with experience and skills was dead. This didn't scare away them at all and our victories started becoming more costly till we lost at alsace. The first defeat which started our spiral into loss and more defeats. After so many losses that I lost count we are once again pushed back at Versailles where it all started. This time we can't run back any more. They have won,but at what cost I may ask.

With no more time to think of these matters,I shoot a ghoul or the living dead(whatever it's called) in the head. Then I do it again, all over till the clip is empty. Then I reload again and repeat the same process. There are probably millions of them, since it looks like there is no end to them no matter how many you kill. They are getting closer with each passing moment. Then suddenly I see one of them coming too close to me. I pull the trigger, nothing happens. The clip is empty. "Fuck" I groan. As it approaches me I stab it in the head with my bayonet, instantly killing it. Then more of them come near the trenches from all directions. I stab so many that I can't even count, but then my arms get tired. Then a horde of them attack me. I can't do anything to save myself. In my last moments I think of my family,my dead wife and 2 daughters. I hope they remain safe in this hell. As the living corpses are eating my flesh,I see a kid probably in his twenties looking at me with horror in his eyes. I wanted to say something to him, something profound or deep,my last words should be something like that but instead, it would be 'fuck' I guess. With these thoughts in my mind I close my eyes and rest peacefully for the first time in what felt like forever.
