Seventeen years ago, the sky over Azura City tore open. From those jagged portals emerged a chaos that nearly leveled civilization, halted only by the emergence of the Shield—a secret order of elite warriors who stood as the final line of defense against the monstrous entities of the "Beyond." Today, the portals are a part of life, and joining the Shield is the only path to honor. For twin brothers Ren and Zen, the upcoming Shield Exam is the crossroads of their lives. Zen is the golden child—calm, precise, and possessing a natural talent that has already marked him as a future member of the Ten Leaders. Ren, however, is fueled by nothing but raw, reckless willpower. While his brother glides through training, Ren is the underdog, constantly dismissed by his peers and struggling to prove he belongs in a world where magic is outlawed and only results matter. The gap between them becomes a chasm when Zen achieves a legendary status during the trials, while Ren is left behind, branded a failure. In a moment of brotherly parting, Zen leaves Ren with a single, strange parting gift: a weathered, unremarkable dagger. To the other aspirants, it is a cruel joke—a pity prize for the brother who couldn’t make the cut. But as Azura City faces a new wave of portal activity and deep-seated secrets begin to leak from the Shield’s shadows, Ren realizes his journey isn't over. Haunted by his brother’s success and his own perceived weakness, Ren must decide if he will accept his fate or forge a new one. In a world that has already written him off, the "useless" dagger may be the only thing standing between Ren and the darkness threatening to consume his home.

Everything started the day after a woman and her thugs used me as a punching bag in a dark alley. If you’re thinking that I woke in some medieval-like fantasy world after they got through, you can’t be further from the truth. There are no castles, dungeons, dragons, or magic swords here. The first few minutes I held out hope that this place would have status bars showing HP/MP, etc. just like a lot of tropes. I mean who wouldn't love some amazing power or magic? Problem is there's no system or cultivation here. But I have a dusty office with an invisible secretary. Oh, and I found out my name by looking at the one stenciled on the office door. The name Dagger should give you a clue. Yeah, that woman sent me into a place where I’m a private detective. It's what they called a shamus back in 1940. The thing is this place isn't on the map and I can't leave. Well, not without a huge loss of blood. Trust me, I've tried. At the end of the day, I’m just an ordinary guy stuck in the past that doesn’t totally match the history books. I can get beat up or killed by any of the gangsters, backstabbing people, or crooked cops I meet. Hell, I can't even tell if the people are NPCs. After all, they seem to have lives like any person you might meet. Then again, how many times to you see dead movie stars wandering around on the streets? It's another dimension that runs like an old movie, leaving me with no choice but to find a way to escape. While I don’t miss my college classes that much, this place certainly puts a damper on my career hopes. That's because Lane Dagger has a lot of people trying to kill him.
