Empty sac at 6 weeks but positive outcome later
Yes, it can happen. I know someone who had an empty sac at 6 weeks but by 7 weeks, the embryo was visible. It might be that the embryo was just developing a bit slower.

Empty gestational sac at 8 weeks and later success stories
I know of a case where at 8 weeks there was an empty gestational sac. But later it was found that it was due to slow implantation. The embryo caught up in development and the pregnancy continued smoothly.

What makes Doyle an interesting character for '28 Weeks Later' fanfiction?
His potential for character development is also a factor. He has probably seen a lot of death and destruction, which means there is room for him to grow, change, or even break. A fanfiction could explore how these experiences shape him over time, whether he becomes more cynical or if he finds a new sense of hope.
