Jingyuan Mutiny
The Jingyuan Mutiny, also known as the Jingshi Rebellion, took place in the fourth year of Emperor Dezong's reign (783 AD) in Chang 'an, the capital.
After Tang Dezong ascended the throne, he intended to change the situation of the military towns after the An Lushan Rebellion. He strengthened the Shence Army and implemented the reduction of the vassals. In September of the fourth year of Jianzhong (AD 783), Tang Dezong ordered Jingyuan Jiedushi Yao Lingyan to lead troops into the siege of Xiangcheng. Tang Dezong fled to Fengtian (now Qian County, Shaanxi Province). The rebels supported Zhu Tao's brother, Zhu Wei, the former governor of Fengxiang, as emperor, and the name of the country was Daqin. Zhu Wei personally led the army to attack Fengtian, and Tang Dezong was besieged for more than a month. History called it the "Disaster of Fengtian".
Zhu Wei was later blocked by Tang defenders and Shuofang Jiedushi Li Huaiguang and other reinforcements, and was defeated in Chang 'an at the end of the same year. Li Huaiguang, who had made great contributions to the rescue, believed that he was suspected and had the intention to betray Tang and secretly colluded with Zhu Wei. In the first year of Xingyuan (784 AD), Li Huaiguang publicly betrayed Tang, but because he was unwilling to become a minister to Zhu Wei, he retreated to Hezhong (now Yongji, Shanxi) and watched. In April of the same year, the Tang court sent troops to quell the rebellion and attacked Chang 'an on the 28th. Zhu Wei led the remnants of his troops to escape and was killed by his generals in Xicheng Tun, Pengyuan, Jingzhou (now Zhenyuan East, Gansu Province). In July of the same year, Tang Dezong returned to Chang 'an and the Jingyuan mutiny ended. In August, the deputy marshal of the river section was ordered to crusade against Li Huaiguang. In the autumn of the first year of Zhenyuan (785 AD), Li Huaiguang was killed by the generals of the Shuofang Army.
This mutiny triggered the disaster of Fengtian, dealt a heavy blow to the authority of the central court, and weakened the military strength of the Jingyuan Army and the Shuofang Army, which were originally stationed in the northwest, leading to a serious border crisis during the Zhenyuan period.
