Quirrell had Voldemort behind him, but Snape's position seemed to have many possibilities of interpretation. It was difficult to determine which side he was speaking for when he threatened Quirrell. Voldemort was on Quirrell

Finally, in front of the Mirror of Erised, Voldemort instructed Quirrell to use Harry to obtain the Sorcerer's Stone, but Quirrell died from touching Harry Potter.
