Fang FamilyThe Fang family was a big family with a long history and rich content.
From the origin, there were three main sources of the surname Fang. One was from the surname Ji. During the reign of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty, Fang Shu (surnamed Ji, also known as Fang Shu) was granted the title of Luo (now Luoyang, Henan Province) due to his meritorious service. His descendants took his name as their surname. The second was from the descendants of Fang Lei and Fang Xiang. It was said that the surname Lei, a descendant of Shennong, was passed down to Lei, the son of Yu Wang, the eighth grandson of Emperor Shennong. He was granted the title of Fangshan (roughly the south of Ye County, Henan Province today) because of his meritorious service when the Yellow Emperor attacked Chiyou. Later, his descendants took the land as their surname Fang. There was also the Fangxiang surname after the mother of the Yellow Emperor, which was also the origin of the Fang family in Henan Province. The third is the division of the Weng family. In the early Song Dynasty, Weng Qiandu, a native of Putian, had six sons with the surnames Hong, Jiang, Weng, Fang, Gong and Wang. The fourth son, Chupu, was surnamed Fang, and his descendants were also surnamed Fang.
In terms of distribution, the Pre-Qin period was mainly active in Henan. At the end of the Western Han Dynasty, it gradually flourished after moving eastward to northern Anhui. During the Tang and Song Dynasties, his footprints spread all over Hainan, Guangdong, Fujian and other places, forming Fujian as the center of the gathering place of Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Wan, Xiang and Yu. During the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, there was a migration from north to southeast and from south to north, re-forming the distribution characteristics with Zhejiang as the center and spreading to the surroundings. In modern times, it was mainly distributed in the three provinces of Anhui, Zhejiang, and Henan, followed by Guangdong, Hubei, Liaoning, Fujian, Hunan, and other provinces.
The Fang family also had many unique family tombs. For example, the Fang family tomb on Phoenix Mountain was located on the southeast slope of Phoenix Mountain, including Fang Pingtian's tomb, the joint tomb of the fourth, fifth and seventh ancestors of the Fang family, Fang Lejing's tomb, Fang Xilv's and Fang Helv's joint tomb, all built in the Ming Dynasty. There was also the ancestral tomb of the fifth ancestor, Lord Panshi, in 577.
In terms of family figures, there were Fang La, the leader of the peasant uprising in Zhejiang at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty, Fang Hui, the litterer of the Yuan Dynasty, Fang Xiaoru, the minister of the Ming Dynasty, Fang Bao, the essayist of the Qing Dynasty, and Fang Zhimin, the revolutionary of the Chinese Proletarian, etc. There were also outstanding people overseas who did not forget their roots and actively contributed to their hometown, like Fang Qiaosheng, the leader of the overseas Chinese in Cambodia. In addition, in Mangshi, Dehong Dai and Jingpo autonomous prefecture in Yunnan Province, China, there was a Fang family that had been passed down for more than 500 years (from the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty to 1955). As the ruler of Mangshi, they established a complete family inheritance system. They not only had administrative power, but also military and judicial power. They had the right to levy taxes and operated independently like a small court. At the same time, there were also people in the family who were expelled because their thoughts and actions were contrary to the family's concept, such as Fang Fang, who was born into a wealthy family in Chaozhou, Guangdong Province, but led the people to rob the rich and help the poor.
