Spartacus (c. 120 - 71 B.C.), also known as Spartax, was a Thracian gladiator. He was originally from Thrace, and his early life was unknown. He might have been a Roman soldier who was captured and sold as a slave. He was sent to Gladiator School by a trainer and performed well in the arena. In 73 B.C., he and Crixus joined forces with 78 people to launch an uprising. During their escape, herdsmen and slaves continued to join in, and the number of rebels increased to more than 100,000. In 72 B.C., the Thracians followed him north to the Alps to return home because of a disagreement between him and Crixus. After defeating Governor Cassius's army at the Battle of Mortena, the Council of Elders ordered Krassu to lead the army against him. In the spring of 71 B.C., Crassus trapped the rebellious slaves in the southern Italian port of Brundesi. After breaking out of the siege, he fled south again and was finally forced into a desperate situation and killed in Apua. The uprising he led shook the foundation of Roman slavery, won a certain "concession" for slaves, prompted slave owners to adopt "mild slavery" to suppress slave resistance, and accelerated the evolution of Roman Republic to imperial system. His image was portrayed in later generations, which reflected people's pursuit of freedom, equality, universal love, and resistance against tyranny. Young Karl regarded him as an idol, believing that he had a noble character and was the true representative of the ancient class. In terms of film and television, there was the American drama "Spartacus," which was based on him, including "Spartacus: Blood and Sand Season 1," and the historical film of the same name, which was released in the United States on October 6,1960.
