The Children of Captain Grant
The Children of Captain Grant was a novel published by the French writer Jules Verne in 1865. In 1864, the Scottish aristocrat, Sir Greenaway, accidentally obtained a document from a drifting object at sea. He learned that Captain Grant, who had been lost two years ago, was still alive, so he decided to take Captain Grant's daughter Mary, son Robert, and others to sail the Duncan to find a rescue. The group met Captain Grant's former sailor, Ayrton, in Australia. They hired him as a guide but were deceived and captured by the aborigines. After escaping, he abandoned Ayrton on the desolate island of Maria Teresa in the Pacific Ocean. However, he unexpectedly met Captain Grant there and returned to Wales together. In the story, because the British government refused to send people to find Captain Grant, Sir Greenaway and the others began to rescue him on their own. They had many difficulties in the search process, such as the captain's position being difficult to determine due to the erosion of the distress letter by the sea, the exploration across the American continent experiencing many natural disasters and dangers, and being deceived by Ayrton in Australia. They had also encountered dangerous situations such as shipwrecks and falling into the hands of the Maori. But in the end, he managed to find Captain Grant. The wicked were punished, and the good were rewarded. Mary married Captain Menger, Baganelle married Arabella, Captain Grant returned to the country and became a hero, and little Robert grew up to be an excellent sailor. The novel showed the adventures of a group of people, and also expressed Captain Grant's resistance to England's enslavement of Scots. It reflected the advanced ideas and noble humane spirit against slavery and colonization. It was the first of the Verne Trilogy, which was popular in the United Kingdom and its immigrants. It was adapted into plays, movies, etc. Read more exciting novels for free
