What Is A Gentleman's Essay?

Answer 1

What is a Gentleman?

Gentleman was a very meaningful and charming concept in traditional China culture.

A gentleman had a unique spiritual quality. They had the persistence of not going with the flow. Just like Bill Gates, when everyone followed the conventional path of studying, he resolutely dropped out of Harvard. With his own ideas, he did not let the secular world influence him and created a career that people looked up to. When a gentleman did things, he would uphold his own opinions and achieve the principle of "a gentleman is united but different, a gentleman is comprehensive but not inferior". He would absorb the opinions of others and not follow others. When he was successful, he would not be proud and arrogant, and when he was frustrated, he would not complain.

A gentleman had extremely high moral cultivation when it came to conduct. They were "lenient to others and strict with themselves". They had a character that did not follow the secular world. Since ancient times, those who left their names for the ages were often mavericks. For example, the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Forest in the Wei and Jin Dynasties showed the gentleman's style with their unruly attitude. Li Bai's unrestrained, Su Shi's heroic, Li Qingzhao's graceful and restrained all contained the integrity of a gentleman. Villains, on the other hand, were the opposite. Villains schemed against others all day long. When they got what they wanted, they became arrogant. They often regarded the satisfaction of others as their own pain, and their friends as the ladder to advancement. They were also good at stirring up trouble and slandering in front of their leaders.

A gentleman was also good at using external conditions to improve himself. As the saying went,"A gentleman is born without any differences and is good at borrowing things." They knew how to make themselves " wise and do no wrong " through learning, and constantly accumulate knowledge and moral character, just like " the accumulation of soil into a mountain, the wind and rain will rise; the accumulation of water into a deep, the dragon will be born; the accumulation of good will become virtue, and the gods will be content, and the holy heart will be complete."

A gentleman sticks to his principles when he lives. " A gentleman doesn't change his ways." They would stick to the right path and wouldn't easily go with the flow. In terms of ambition, they set up the right ambition, such as Nan Huaijin's determination to inherit China culture, Lu Xun abandoned medicine and used writing to awaken the souls of the people; In terms of meritorious service, they actively practiced, such as Lu Jianxin constantly refreshing the height of buildings, Yuan Longping worked hard to realize the dream of "enjoying the cool under the grain"; In terms of writing, they never stopped writing, such as Sima Qian who was sentenced to castration but still worked hard to write the Records of the Historian, Darwin founded the theory of species evolution, and Max founded the theory of the liberation of the Proletarian.

The gentleman's style was like the orchids in the deep mountains and valleys, the slim and elegant bamboos, the chrysanthemums that stood aloof from the world, and the plum blossoms that bullied the frost and snow. They were clear on the outside, indifferent in the inside, and did not make a state of flattering the world. They were the role models of morality and behavior. With their unique charisma, they shone brightly in the long river of China history.
