Elephants and Giants
Ancient works of art, such as the murals of the Nubian pyramids, depicted giants hunting elephants or carrying them on their shoulders. From these descriptions, the elephant was huge and heavy. If the giant could hunt or carry a load on the elephant, it implied that the giant had great strength and a tall figure. Modern elephants were the largest terrestrial animals on Earth. There were different species such as African grassland elephants, African forest elephants, and Asian elephants. There were many records and legends about giants in ancient times, such as the giants in Egyptian murals and the cyclops in Homerian mythology. The two were linked in these ancient cultural and artistic works. However, the scientific community had no unified opinion on whether the ancient giants really existed.
Prehistoric Elephants
There were many types of prehistoric elephants and they had a rich evolutionary process. Elephants originated from the Lin grey beast that appeared about 60 million years ago. Before the Lin grey beast, the ancestral elephant (which lived 47 million years ago) was once thought to be the origin of elephants. The earliest mammoth was the pygmy mammoth that lived on Crete about 3.59 million years ago. Juwei elephants had a pair of spiral incisors. Dinosaurs had no fangs on their upper jaw, but a pair of downward curved fangs on their lower jaw. Male Dinosaurs had a shoulder height of nearly five meters. Prairie mammoths lived in the middle of the Pleistocene 600,000 years ago. They might be the ancestors of Ice Age mammoths. The length of the adult elephant tusks could reach 3 to 4 meters. There used to be more than 180 species of proboscis (the same species as elephants), such as African mastodons, saber-toothed elephants, mammoths, etc. Between 30 million and 25 million years ago, proboscis evolved slowly, with only two out of eight populations evolving. 20 million years ago, after the collision between the Afro-Arabian Plate and the European continent, the evolution of proboscis accelerated and many new species were born. However, with the constant changes in the Earth's environment, such as climate warming and cooling, the long-nosed elephant continued to face survival challenges. Many long-nosed elephants that adapted to forest life disappeared when the Earth warmed up about six million years ago. When the Earth entered the Fourth Period of frequent climate fluctuations (the beginning of the Ice Age) about three million years ago, the extinction rate of long-nosed elephants in Europe and Asia increased fivefold. Many prehistoric elephant species went extinct, and now only African elephants were left. Asian elephants and forest elephants.
