Magical Artifact

Answer 1

In Buddhism, there were many types of magical artifacts. In a broad sense, in Buddhist temples, the instruments used for solemn Buddhist altars, prayers, cultivation, offerings, Dharma meetings, and other Buddhist things, as well as the prayer beads, tin sticks, and other cultivation tools carried by Buddhists, could be called ritual implements. From an intrinsic point of view, the instruments used to support Buddhas, solemn Taoist sites, and practice Buddhism to practice the perfect Buddhism were also ritual implements.

According to their uses, they can be roughly divided into six types: solemn instruments, Buddhist instruments, time-telling instruments, storage instruments, portable instruments, and secret teaching instruments. There are eight categories, including the Buddhist tools of the solemn dojo.(such as Buddhist Altar, Sumeru Altar, Banner, Cover, Buddhist Pillars, etc.)(such as lamps, flowers, incense, censer, clothes, etc.), Buddhist instruments used for chanting (such as wooden fish, bell, drum, chime, cloud board, etc.), utensils used by ancient monks (such as bowls, three clothes, bath beans, headscarves, towels, tooth wood, water filtering bags, prayer beads, etc.), dhyana ritual implements (such as whisks, ruyi, bamboo grates, futon, etc.), ritual implements for storing objects (such as Buddhist shrines, stupas, scripture boxes, ring boxes, etc.), ritual implements of esoteric Buddhism (such as mandala, vajra bell, vajra pestle, conch, protective tools, etc.), and special ritual implements of Tibetan Buddhism (such as Tangka, Hada, Shizi, Eight Auspicious, Seven Treasures, Skull, Gawu, etc.).

Different magic tools had unique uses, shapes, and sizes. They would change in different time and space. For example, most of the bells were made of bronze and a few were made of iron. They were about 150 centimeters high and 60 centimeters in diameter. The upper end had a fishing hand carved into a dragon's head and the lower end had two lotus-shaped seats. It was hung in the bell tower to summon the public or report the time in the morning and evening. Moreover, the bell had great merit for cultivation. Wooden fish are divided into round wooden fish and long wooden fish. The round wooden fish is used to beat when chanting scriptures, so as to get the meaning of the fish's diligence and non-rest to encourage the cultivators. The long wooden fish is carved into the shape of a fish or a dragon-headed fish, which is often hung in the vegetarian hall or under the porch of the warehouse to gather monks. There were many types of drums, including fasting, bathing, chanting, and chanting. The big chime is a copper-cast bowl-shaped ritual object. It is placed on the right side of the Buddha table to guide the rise and fall of chanting during Dharma meetings and lessons.

In Tibetan Buddhism, there were also unique ritual implements, such as the Vajra Pestle, which evolved from ancient Indian weapons. Its Sanskrit originally meant "thunder" or "diamond". It was made of gold, silver, copper, iron, sandalwood, and other materials. The common shapes were single-strand, three-strand, five-strand, nine-strand, etc., which symbolized that it could destroy all ignorance, ignorance, and evil. The Vajra Bell was usually used in conjunction with the Vajra Pestle. Cultivators shook the bell in their left hand and held the Pestle in their right hand, symbolizing compassion and wisdom respectively. The Vajra Scepter was an instrument used by Tibetan Buddhism to subdue demons. The head of the Scepter was a sharp three-edged sword, and the handle was carved with patterns. When practicing Dharma, it was inserted into the boundary around the mandala. The Vajra Axe was shaped like an ancient weapon axe, and the handle was shaped like a Vajra pestle. It was mostly used by the Buddha Mother to protect the Dharma and kill demons. The Vajra Hook originated from the hook of the Indian elephant tamer and was used to subdue demons.
