Shangguan Wan 'er was a female official, poet, and imperial concubine in the Tang Dynasty. She was the granddaughter of Prime Minister Shangguan Yi. She was born in Shan County (now Shanzhou, Henan Province), and her ancestral home was Shangyu, Longxi (now Tianshui, Gansu Province). Shangguan Wan 'er was appreciated by Wu Zetian because of her outstanding talent and was known as the "Prime Minister of Women". Her grandfather and father were executed for being framed for rebellion, and she was enslaved in the palace since she was young. Although she had a feud with Wu Zetian for killing her father, Shangguan Wan 'er still had to serve Wu Zetian in the palace.
