The origins of the Three Great Ancestors of Heyuan Thirteen Farms were the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, Tiger-Subduing Bodhisattva, and Dingguang Bodhisattva worshipped by the Hakka people. These three gods were worshiped in the Chifengzhang Temple in Changting Hetian. At first, they were three stones. According to the records, in the first year of Zhengde of the Ming Dynasty (1506), when a merchant surnamed Zhong was sleeping at the foot of Chifeng Mountain, he found three lights on the top of the mountain. He carved these three stones into stone Buddha statues and worshipped them in the temple, calling them the "Three Great Ancestors". Since then, this belief had spread widely in Changting and became one of the most important folk beliefs in the area.
