The princes were all gathered in a room and sat facing each other. Someone showed them two black hats and two white hats. They were blindfolded, and each prince was given a hat. The rest of the hats were placed in another room. The king told the princes that the first person to guess the color of his hat would marry the princess. The only condition was that he could not take off his hat. If anyone gave the wrong answer, they would be killed. Then, their blindfolds were removed.
