Why don't adults allow us to read novels?

I used to read novels openly and honestly. I thought it was no big deal. Later, my father saw it and asked me where I got this book. I said it was my sister's. In the end, my father scolded my cousin. I'm now 14 years old and I read novels to kill time when I'm bored. However, ever since I saw my cousin being scolded, I secretly read it. Actually, the first time I read it was purely out of curiosity, but I didn't think it was a big deal. Why didn't he allow us to read it? What's the difference between watching romance movies on TV and reading novels? It was just a performance and a written one. Moreover, I felt that the language was vivid and realistic. There were also many beautiful sentences that made people feel as if they were there. It could also speed up my reading speed and writing ability. Moreover, I felt that after reading a book, I had a lot of insights and made goals for my life. I admit that I secretly finished reading it, but that was because the situation didn't allow it. My classmate, I saw her reading a novel and asked her where she got it. She said that she bought it, and her parents didn't say anything when they saw it. Why can't our parents do the same? There are many reasons why adults don't allow us to read novels. Perhaps they thought that being too engrossed in novels would waste time and affect their studies.
