The Taiwan woman, Sodern, was a prince of Morocco from Arabia. The two married in 1953, when San Mao was still young, and José was her reader. They spent 20 years of married life in the Sahara Desert. During that time, José helped San Mao through many difficult lives. This experience became one of San Mao's most famous works and an important milestone in her literary career.
