A Madman's Diary was a black humor novel written by Harrington in the 19th century. It told the story of a pretentious but actually humble and shameless British upper class figure who went crazy and absurd in order to escape from reality. The protagonist, George Alvers, was born in a noble family, but his family had declined, and he himself had become hypocritical and degenerate for various reasons. He thought that he had extraordinary talent and insight, but in reality, he was running into a wall everywhere. In order to escape from reality, he began a crazy journey. He participated in all kinds of strange rituals and activities such as jumping gods, divination, and visiting mental hospitals. On his crazy journey, he met all kinds of people, including a crazy scientist, a man who claimed to be "God", a fanatical religious believer, and a slave. Through these characters, George Orwell saw the injustice of society and the distortion of human nature and tried to change reality through his own actions. At the end of the novel, George Orwell realized that he had fallen into a deeper despair. He tried to find a way out, but in the end, he chose to end his crazy life. The whole novel was full of black humor and irony, reflecting the distortion of human nature and social injustice through the criticism of the real society.
