Brutal but beneficially so. While to some it may seem slow i find its pace deserving of praise, in most novels i see around these parts the characters grow to fast and succeed too easily, while pleasant at first it quickly becomes mundane, this novel has reversed such a fate and the uphill battle that is this boy's life is a pleasant, though sometimes painful, reminder that life can be unbearably hard yet still not keep even the most average down as long as you take advantage of what little you have. The slap in the face that is the cruelty of life grounds this story a little closer to reality, but the aspirations held and the battles fought will surely be awe inspiring. If this story isn't for you, thats fine, but i personally would love to see one such as saiph, depraved from the start, fight a proper battle to the top, not just a given victory but a feat gained through more struggle and hardship than it may be worth, a victory in the face of a harsh reality set in fantasy.
