"Mother," Vanessa said as she walked in.
The old lady in bed squinted her eyes as she tried to look at Bel. "Who is that?" she asked, slowly pulling herself to a sitting position.
"Don't," Vanessa said, rushing toward her.
"It's just a little back pain, Vanessa. Don't treat me like a feeble little child."
"Sorry, Mother," she said but didn't step back. Instead, Vanessa adjusted the pillow behind the older lady before moving away.
"My name is Bel," she introduced herself when she caught the older woman's gaze again. "I am married to Davien."
"The Crown Prince?" she asked, narrowing her eyes.
Bel nodded. "Yes."
"Oh, a human, eh? In all my years, I never would have thought this day would come. What's your name, child?"
Bel frowned. She had clearly just said her name. She wondered if the older lady was hard of hearing or forgetful. "Bel," she repeated.
