Chapter 10 -[Gillyweed]

As expected, the prophet again called the young man a dark creature. They emphasized the use of parseltongue as a characteristic trait of dark wizards.

On the island everyone was too happy to be bothered by the nonsense written in that rag they called a newspaper.

That day, all the young people were doing independent study or just having fun around the area.

But in the main room, an important meeting was taking place, concerning the troublesome tournament. The main topic was lying on a cushion on the table.

Harry and the rest had been discussing how to deal with the strange egg. They decided that it wouldn't be a good idea to just open it. So they had delayed opening it until they had taken certain... precautions.

With all possible caution, sighing, the dark-haired man opened the golden object. No one was prepared for the terrible sound that filled the place. The noise that came out bothered the Lupinids much more than the rest.

" Fuck! What is that?!" the green-eyed man shouted.

" It's like a Banshee's cry! " said Hermione.

" Yes, it is very annoying!" Minerva admitted.

" Our ears are more sensitive! " Tonks clarified. " Don't even think about opening it again!"

" Does anyone know what that is? " asked Dan Granger, cleaning his ear with a finger.

" Mermaids, " said Fitwich. " I've heard Dumbledore talking to them a couple of times by the lake."

" Isn't this against the rules? " asked Hermione. " I mean! According to the rules, the Headmaster and Professors cannot openly help the competitors."

" That's true, " Pomona replied, smiling. " But remember, dear, that we are not ordinary Professors. We are your masters, and learning allows certain… advantages."

" Anyway, " Filius added, " I just made a general comment, " he shrugged, " If our champion heard it, it's not my fault and it's not against the rules, " Minerva nodded.

" Finding out what it says and how to deal with it is up to you, " said the Scottish woman. " By the way! Mr. Bagman informed me that there will be a Christmas ball and the presence of the champion is obligatory, " she said, looking at him. " You will need a partner. It is expected that both of you, along with the rest of the champions, will open the dance. " Everyone smiled at the face the young man made.

" Hermione." said the brunette." Would you do me the honor of being my partner?" the girl smiled.

" As if I would let another girl be one," she replied. Everyone laughed at her.

{SCENE BREAK}

Only the eldest would be allowed to attend the Yule Ball at Hogwarts. As expected, there were many protests, but most died down when it was proposed to hold their own ball before the end of the year.

The lupins enjoyed their dance classes. Their improved reflexes and coordination allowed them to learn very easily. In one week they had acquired a skill worthy of great dancers.

No doubt the youngsters would make a big difference at Hogwarts.

When Harry discovered the riddle, he was furious, to say the least. He spent the whole night running through the forest with Shadow in tow. Together they destroyed part of the fence. From the balcony of her room, Hermione looked into the darkness as if she could see it. Next to her, her familiar rubbed himself against her, trying to comfort her.

The green-eyed boy appeared, with his clothes torn and some minor scratches, just after dawn. Everyone waited for him to take a shower and eat something to ask him for explanations. A little calmer, he explained the reason for his outburst.

" I think... they'll use a hostage." said the boy looking at Hermione.

" That old man is crazy!" Andromeda stood up very upset." How could he involve someone in this madness?! The tournament is already dangerous for the champions! Now he includes others!"

" The problem is that the first person that comes to mind is Hermione." said the boy.

" But... they can't get onto the island." said the brunette." I don't know how they could do it."

" The dance," he answered.

" It's more than two months before the test!" Andromeda replied." If the old man did something like that...!" she couldn't find the words." Amelia would eat him alive!"

" True, " said Minerva. " But it wouldn't be a bad idea to take precautions."

" Portkeys, " Flitwich suggested. Minerva and the other wizards nodded.

" To each his own. And don't stray from the group! " the woman finished.

" We will begin to prepare everything." Andromeda finished.

{SCENE BREAK}

The day of the Triwizard Tournament Ball at Hogwarts Castle of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

As expected, the girls disappeared several hours before the departure time. The boys stayed for a couple of hours talking or playing before going upstairs to get ready.

In a group, they would go directly to the castle.

Several elves would be in charge of supplying the food previously prepared on the island. No one wanted to risk eating something prepared there. Especially with an old manipulator willing to do anything and with a potions master at his disposal.

The Grangers and Pomona would be in charge of keeping the youngest entertained.

The rest would accompany the young people to the dance.

The young men were speechless as they watched the girls come down from their rooms. Julius Somerset temporarily lost his control of transformation and ended up wagging his tail while still looking at the young Sara Bellow.

" Control yourself, Mr. Somerset, " said Minerva when she saw him show his tail.

The embarrassed boy picked up his tail and smiled at the young woman in front of him who looked at him amused.

{SCENE BREAK}

The arrival was as everyone expected. Above all, different and spectacular.

The Grims had been left on the island to avoid trouble. Needless to say, the magical beings were not very happy.

" Remember! " said Minerva. " Don't trust anyone. You know what they think and I wouldn't be surprised if they were up to something. Don't let anyone lose their pendant! " said the Scottish woman taking out her own. " If someone is in trouble and for some reason is alone, they should use it without hesitation."

" And if you want something to drink, call any of the five elves who are with us. Dobby, Winky, Dipsy, Pufley or Rudolf. " All the children nodded. " Don't take anything that is offered to you or that you have lost sight of."

" And show us anything that someone gives you immediately. " Andromeda pointed out. " Try not to touch it directly."

With the instructions given, the group made their presence felt at the entrance to the great hall.

Minerva, along with Harry and Hermione, was ahead of everyone.

The couple was the center of attention. More than one young witch blushed at the sight of the boy. Not even Sirius Black in his prime could match his godson tonight.

On the other hand, Hermione managed to make some people stop looking at the French champion for a moment. And being a Veela, that was saying a lot.

When Minerva rejoined the other Headmasters, the pair hung back. There was no way they would be anywhere near the old man or Snape.

The old man noticed this and nodded from his seat in greeting. The couple, serious, returned the gesture.

The dinner began with everyone entering the great hall. The champions shared seats with the judges.

Albus explained the system for ordering food. Everyone followed him except the Apprentices.

Without saying anything the food appeared in front of them.

Albus and the rest of those sitting at the table noticed that the young men were using cutlery and plates of the purest black.

" Is something wrong with the food or…?" the old man asked the young man.

" The castle's cutlery is made of gold with silver decorations. " replied the green-eyed man. " Remember our condition."

" I apologize." replied the old man.

" We thought something like this might happen, " Minerva added, " and we brought our own cutlery and food."

" Dear Minerva." Albus said amused." You know better than anyone that Hogwarts food is some of the best in the wizarding world."

" Yes, but on the condition of my apprentices." the Scottish woman stopped him." It is better to take certain precautions. We cannot know if someone has put something in the food. Harmless for the rest but… fatal for a werewolf."

Some had the decency to look embarrassed and agree with him. Others, like Snape, just made a face of disgust at what she had said. Minerva swore that the potioneer had done something like that. She couldn't stop thinking that he had done it and that was why she was upset.

With dinner over, the Headmaster asked everyone to stand.

Then, with a wave of the hand, the tables disappeared and the place was ready for the dance to begin. On one side there were smaller tables for those who wanted to rest. The elves had placed a couple of tables full of drinks and some food.

" Witches and wizards! Ladies and gentlemen! " said Dumbledore. " Let the ball begin!"

The four champions took their partners and upon hearing the music the dance began.

It soon became clear who the best dancing couple was. Harry and Hermione eclipsed almost all the other champions. Fleur Delacrue had many a boy looking at her with idiotic looks. Victor Krum, on the other hand, was followed by a group of girls and the occasional Quidditch fanatic.

As the rest joined in the dance, a group of couples formed, standing close together. Only at the judges' table did Albus Dumbledore notice that these couples were all from the fourth school.

Snape had been close to the boy as soon as the party began.

On a couple of occasions, he tried to get closer, but he just walked away in the other direction.

When he saw him at one of the tables he had his best chance.

" Resting, Potter? " he said in his usual venomous tone.

" Do you want something, Mr. Snape? " he said.

" Professor Snape! " he corrected him.

"You're not my professor, so to me, you're Mr. Snape." the boy finished.

" I understand that some things may seem a little confusing to some… people." he said, exaggerating the last part." but it is better for them to adapt or… disappear."

" If it were up to me, I would never have seen your face again, " the young man replied. " But someone had the brilliant idea of including me in this madness."

" I doubt that's how it was." the potioneer snorted." I'm sure you found a way to get someone to put your name in the goblet." The couple looked at each other, amused.

" I consider you a person of some… knowledge, " said Harry. The adult wizard took a step but stopped himself. " Explain to me how a student can cheat an item as ancient and powerful as the Goblet of Fire."

" I didn't say it was a student! " he said with hatred. " I'm more inclined to…"

" Professor? " Hermione finished, amused. " I doubt something like that could happen in front of the great Albus, many names and titles, Dumbledore. " she finished, amused.

" Weren't you taught not to laugh at your elders? " said the deputy Headmaster on the verge of exploding.

" Only when my elders earn their respect," she replied.

" If you'll excuse us, " said Harry, standing up and taking Hermione's hand. " We need some fresh air."

"It's true." Hermione added." Suddenly the whole atmosphere is strange." she made a gesture of smelling." I smell... anger and..." she smiled." hate."

Without another word, the pair rejoined the rest of the apprentices. Snape turned furiously and ended up deducting a hundred points from the first person he came across, a young Gryffindor.

[T/N: Little man flexing the little bit of power he has.]

Within a minute, everyone was warned to stay away from the black-clad guy with the big nose who smelled of potion ingredients.

The couple were little more disturbed. Ron Weasley approached, wanting to bother them, but Julius Somerset stood in front of him and put him off any further action. Perhaps the decoration on the chest of his robes, very similar to a large… spider, had an influence.

One couple was not so lucky. Draco Malfoy decided that if he couldn't get close to Potter and his... wife, he would let others know what he thought.

He noticed a couple approaching the tables. They were only a few steps away from the others, but that was all the blond needed.

He and his two gorillas stood between them and the rest of the apprentices.

" How dare animals be in the same room as real wizards? " said the blond with an air of superiority and looking as if he had just created the biggest joke in the wizarding world. Behind him, his trained gorillas smiled.

The couple looked at him and recognized the description their alphas gave them about Draco Malfoy.

" Malfoy, right? " said the boy. The blond smiled arrogantly.

" I see you know me," he replied.

" No. You just fit what we were told," she replied. " Blond, smelling of perfume, and believing himself to be something he isn't. Or so Lord Black told us! " She knew that would bother him.

" That animal has no right to be called by that surname!" said the boy angrily. At his side his gorillas snapped their fingers." I am the only one who can have that title! And soon I will!" he looked them up and down." But what can you expect from two animals?" he looked at the girl again." Although you…" he smiled." Maybe I could keep you as my pet." he tried to touch her.

" If you touch me I'll rip your hand off," she said with a sweet smile. The blond quickly pulled his arm away.

" Leave it Becky." said the boy standing up and offering his hand." You know what they say about small dogs." as he said it he looked amused at the blond." They're noisier than they are dangerous." Grabbe and Goyle took a step forward." Are you sure?" said the young man." Could you surpass the strength and speed of a werewolf?" the couple stopped for a second.

"You're not transformed," Goyle said at last, surprising Malfoy that his brain was working at all.

" You don't know much about us, do you? " said the young woman with a metal cup in her hand. " We are stronger than the rest. " As she said it, she easily crushed the cup. That made the trio back off. " Who is superior? " she joked before leaving with her companions and leaving the trio white with fear.

One beetle didn't have a good night either. Rita Skeeter couldn't get within ten feet of Harry Potter or any of his companions without noticing that everyone was looking around. A couple of them even sniffed the air. She realized that it was quite possible that the werewolves could smell her in her Animagus form. She didn't want to take any chances and preferred to stay close to the headmistress to gather information. With almost no conversation between her and the rest, an hour later she went out in search of any news.

All in all, the night went pretty well for the lupinids. By the time they had finished more than half the castle, they were delighted with the young apprentices.

They had managed to get many to overcome their reluctance about werewolves.

At the party, they were able to meet much more openly with their friends. This did not go unnoticed by Albus Dumbledore.

The old man saw this as a help to his plans. If he could win over the youngsters, he would have a way of influencing young Potter.

That also gave him an unexpected help. For the second task, he needed someone to serve as a hostage for young Potter. The first choice was his wife, but he knew one hundred percent that there was no way the young woman would put herself in his hands. And it didn't even cross his mind to suggest it to Minerva or Andromeda. He shuddered. Just thinking about it...

He didn't dare use Neville Longbottom, young Susan Bones, the Davies girl, or the Greengrass heiresses. He only had Luna Lovegood left. Yes, the girl would do.

The last surprise of the night came from Harry himself. When he returned to the island his… wife was very happy. Without knowing how they both ended up having an incredible make-out session and some stimulating explorations. They both ended up naked in his bed with a big smile of satisfaction.

All in all, it was a memorable night for everyone.

[T/N: NAH, guys they went to an onsen, that's why.]

{SCENE BREAK}

Before the end of the year, on the island, they had their own Christmas ball. The younger ones enjoyed it more than anyone else. They were able to enjoy what the older ones had already had. And on this occasion even the Grims were present.

The other families who supported them were also present at the ball. It became an opportunity to strengthen their relations even further. Of course, the lupinids were careful not to be discovered. There was trust but… it was better that those who knew the secret were as few as possible.

That year at the academy, they enjoyed some great parties.

After the holidays everything continued relatively normally, between classes and small meetings.

Classes had progressed more than normal. Compared to Hogwarts the boys had advanced beyond their sixth year. Each of the apprentices was much more prepared than their actual year at Hogwarts.

As expected in the Wizengamot, Andromeda had to endure Dumbledore's continuous attempts to try to meet with her alone or to arrange a meeting with young Potter.

The woman was barely able to contain herself. The old man was just taking advantage of the fact that a meeting in the governing chamber did not hinder his oath for the tournament. Since it had nothing to do with any matter related to Hogwarts.

Luckily, every time the old man tried to get close to one of his allies, she came to the rescue. Soon Albus found himself pushed aside by the rest of the group. Augusta's presence always made him a little nervous. And if he added Amelia and the Greengrass patriarch to the mix...

In the end, he had to leave the group. Although he tried to surprise the woman several times… without success.

{SCENE BREAK}

The day of the second task finally arrived. The pair and the adults instructing them had agreed on three different ways of carrying out the task. In McGonagall's words, one can never have enough backup plans.

Everything had been arranged for the test. Harry would decide how to conduct the test. Although he would have several solutions in case something did not go as planned.

From the Forbidden Forest, they watched as the entire Castle approached the Black Lake. They could see the platform, over the water, where the other three champions were waiting. The judges looked towards the forest and noticed with amusement how Dumbledore kept talking to Minerva. No doubt he wanted her to call them.

Just five minutes into the match, Minerva raised her wand and let out sparks.

With the signal given the apprentices and their companions left the forest.

" Remember not to get separated! " warned Tonks. " Above all, don't be alone with anyone we don't know! " all the young people nodded.

" That goes for you too, Tonks!" added Emma." And for Clumsy!" the Grim looked at Tonks who shrugged.

" Let's finish this nonsense, " Harry said at last.

" Do you think they've taken someone hostage? " Hermione asked.

" If they have, I'll rip that old goat's head off." Harry finished.

" As long as it's not Ron," she added. He looked at her, scared.

" Nooo!" they said at the same time, amused by the crazy idea.

The group approached the lake and many cheered them on from afar. As in the first task, they were placed between the French and the Hufflepuffs.

Hermione could hear some swearing from the snake area, which they ignored.

Harry approached the rest of the champions. Albus tried to approach him, and the young man stepped back. The old man stood up. With everyone watching this, he could only push him further away if he forced the issue.

" We can begin now!" said Dumbledore ignoring what had happened." Each of the champions has had something very precious taken from them. In this case, someone very precious." The young French woman tensed." If you solved the riddle of your egg, you'll know that you only have one hour to get it back." she looked at Fleur." In the case of Miss Delacrue, her little sister is the person to be rescued." The young woman let out a scream and looked at her Headmistress who also looked worried.

" It can't be! " she said.

" It's totally safe." the old man silenced her.

" Veela are beings of fire." Harry added." And you put a little girl with Veela blood in a frozen lake." he snorted." Very well thought out." Several understood what the Potter boy wanted to convey.

Albus was lucky that his beard hid his blush. He hadn't thought about the little girl's ancestry.

" I don't think there will be any problems. I made sure that a spell…" the old man was cut off again.

" On a girl with magical blood, the spells are weaker." the green-eyed man cut him off again." Even I know that! Let's get this started before we have to regret something." several people looked at the old man angrily. In the case of the Headmistress of Beauxbatton, the fury could be seen on her face.

" To sum up!" Ludo Bagman tried to take control to calm the spirits." Mr. Diggony has to rescue Miss Cho Chang, Mr. Krum Miss Moon, and Mr. Potter Miss Lovegood!" everyone could hear the young man's growl.

" I hope nothing happens or you will regret it." said the young man.

" Mr. Potter, I have no doubt that... " Ludo Bagman fell silent upon seeing the look the young man gave him. " Let's begin! " he said out loud. " As soon as you leave, you will have one hour to complete the task. " He raised his wand. " Ready...? Now! " As he said it, he let out a blast with his wand.

Instantly Cedric and Fleur cast a bubble helmet spell on each other. At their side, Victor Krum was giving the final passes to a spell before diving into the water.

Harry pulled a handful of gillyweed from his pocket. He had opted for the simplest and most advantageous solution.

In less than a minute the four champions were in the water, searching for their targets.

Harry was a little nervous, the fact that Luna was being used was the main reason. But his animal side, like any other canine, was not very fond of so much water.

As soon as he had submerged himself he went straight to the bottom. Minerva had told everyone that the old man had mentioned from time to time that the village of the merpeople was on the side of the lake closest to the Forbidden Forest, although close to the bottom.

The gillweed allowed him to move around like crazy. He noticed that something was disappearing into the seabed in front of him. He barely saw it for a second, but he swore it was… a shark?

On one side he saw Cedric who had taken a similar direction to his. Out of habit he turned and looked for the French girl. He saw her going towards the back as fast as she could.

He could tell that worry was making her reckless.

With his better vision in the water he saw her approaching a group of algae, ideal for the presence of Glindylows. A movement confirmed that the girl would have a bad encounter.

He turned and swam towards her.

Just as the first aquatic being grabbed her by the ankle, he arrived near her.

It was lucky because when the blonde turned around to get rid of the creature, many more came out from behind and grabbed her by the hair and arm.

" Depulso!" Harry shouted. It was a good thing that the gillyweed allowed him to perform magic. In his mind, he wondered if the spell had sounded as unpleasant as the song inside the golden egg. " Depulso, Depulso!" The Frenchwoman was free in no time.

" Mergsy." said the veela inside her bubble helmet.

" The village of the mermaids is over there, " he said, hoping she would understand. " Follow me."

It seemed to work as the blonde followed him.

Along the way, they faced several Glindylows waiting among some rocks.

They were not a big challenge since the two of them quickly decided on them.

A pair of Kelpies approached the two, trying to take them away.

Harry used some of his strength and let out a loud growl.

The aquatic creatures could recognize a predator stronger than them. They quickly disappeared.

Beside him, Fleur felt the power that the young man let out and something inside her felt fear and… interest. The young man was much more than she had heard.

It wasn't long before they began to hear music. As they got closer, it became clearer. The nervous Veela tried to move faster. The young man calmed her down by seizing her hand and helping her move.

Shortly afterwards they could see the buildings of the mermaids in the distance.

The aquatic houses blended perfectly into the rest of the lake bed. It seemed that the stones and wood scraps had ended up there and not been placed there intentionally. The plants and aquatic creatures had colonized the buildings and joined them to the lake bed.

The boy noticed a certain resemblance to some old photos he had seen of the remains of a shipwreck. Although this place had a beauty of its own that had little to do with the remains of an old sunken ship.

In front of the buildings, its inhabitants sang a happy song and left a wide corridor for them to pass through.

It was easy to know that this was the direction they had to take.

In a square presided over by a strange sculpture of what appeared to be a mermaid or triton with a trident in his hand.

Around him, four people floated asleep, tied to ropes made of seaweed.

She quickly went straight to a little girl who was almost a perfect copy of her. No doubt her sister. He had no trouble recognizing the calm, almost smiling face of Luna Lovegood.

He noticed the trouble Fleur was having trying to free her sister.

He approached her and touched her shoulder. When the French woman turned around, he offered her his knife. The young woman quickly took it and cut the rope. Almost without looking, she gave him the knife again.

Harry had to stop her. When the blonde turned around, the green-eyed man gave her a piece of gillyweed and pointed at the little Veela.

" In case she wakes up," he said, adding the gesture of eating.

He didn't know if she understood him, but the French woman understood what he was offering her and why. With a grateful smile, she took it and then began to swim up, holding her sister tightly.

He went towards Luna.

Before cutting the rope he waited to see the other two champions.

He raised his wand and cast a Spell.

" Lumos!" an intense glow filled the place. Some of the marine beings hid themselves from the intense light.

He only held the spell for a few seconds. Then he stopped it and shortly afterward he cast it again. He repeated this about ten times.

When he finished he looked around. He smiled when he noticed a strange shark man approaching. Victor Krum, no doubt. As soon as he got to him he could make out Cedric Diggony swimming towards him.

Satisfied that they had both found their hostages, he gave Luna's rope a quick cut and began to ascend rapidly.

Krum stayed by his side for a few seconds, but little by little Harry's greater strength and physical form took over.

Upon reaching the surface he went straight to the judges' platform.

He could see, still submerged, a frightened little girl awake and looking around in fear. As he feared, the spell had failed on the young Veela. The furious screams in French from her Sister were further unmistakable proof of that.

With a push, he pulled Luna out of the water. At that moment the blonde woke up.

" Hello Harry." she said smiling." How do you stand this cold?" she added beginning to shiver.

He just smiled and helped her up onto the platform. Soon after, Madame Pomfrey wrapped her in a blanket and applied a drying spell.

The boy swore he heard the nurse complaining about crazy old men and young people with pneumonia.

He looked at the young Veela and smiled. The little girl tightened her grip on the hand holding her sister.

" Don't worry," he said. He could see that the little girl understood him.

" Do you speak French? " she asked.

" Yes." he answered." but I think it's because of the seaweed you ate." he clarified." When did you wake up?"

" While we were going up." she answered looking at her sister." Fleur forced me to take that thing." she made a disgusted face.

" Yes, it tastes awful." he replied smiling." But it works!" the little girl nodded.

" Yes, I was choking until I swallowed it," he replied.

" Don't worry, the effects will pass soon." as he said it, he saw how the little girl was beginning to have trouble breathing." Get out now."

The young girl pulled her sister's arm to get her attention. With a jerk, her older sister pulled her out of the water. Soon they were both surrounded by a comfortable, warm blanket.

The green-eyed boy watched as Victor and Cedric arrived and pulled their hostages out of the water. Less than five minutes later he felt the gillyweed lose its power and he got out of the water.

Outside, Fleur and her sister gave him a grateful hug and kiss.

From the stands, Hermione felt her inner wolf grow nervous.

Albus raised his hands to silence them all and then spoke.

" First place Fleur Delacrue! In second place Victor Krum, followed by Cedric Diggony and finally Harry Potter! " The boy looked at him in disbelief as did the other champions. In the stands, the Apprentices began to protest.

" But Harry came in second place! " Minerva protested.

" Yes, but he didn't get out of the water and therefore didn't complete the task until he did." Albus clarified." I'm sorry but the rules are clear on this. The task is only completed when both of them get out of the water."

" That's nonsense! " added the Scottish woman. " It was only said that they had to rescue their hostage and bring them back. The rest is up to you. " The old man raised his hands conciliatory.

" I have consulted with Bartemius and Ludo, and they agree with what I have said. " Those mentioned at his side nodded.

" No problem." Harry reassured her." It's time to go." He walked away without looking at the old man or the rest of the wizards at the ministry.

At the entrance, he greeted Fleur and her sister. The little girl looked at him in amazement, ever since she found out he was Harry Potter.

When the young man left the platform, the rest of the apprentices stood up from their seats and went towards him.

From Slytherin Draco Malfoy tried to mock.

" Look at the little dog, wet and beaten! " several snakes laughed upon hearing this.

The dark-skinned man looked at him and smiled sarcastically. Then he and the rest walked away into the forest.

From the stands, Draco gripped his wand tightly. The green-eyed man's contempt had been seen by everyone.

Albus thought about how the green-eyed boy had behaved. He thought he would act differently when he saw how he was being treated. But it was exactly the opposite of how he expected it to happen. The boy barely flinched and calmly walked off the platform.

Again the young man walked away without being able to find out anything about him.
