The shadow that rose before them was no ordinary manifestation of the Abyss. It pulsed with chaotic energy, its form constantly shifting between grotesque faces, writhing limbs, and ominous symbols that glowed with a sickly red light. The roar that had accompanied its emergence resonated deep in Kaida's chest, shaking her to her core.
"What… is that thing?" Ryven asked, stepping back, his voice barely steady.
Ardyn's eyes narrowed, his usual smugness replaced by an expression of grim resolve. "That," he said, pointing toward the monstrosity, "is what I warned you about. The Abyss is no longer content with being an unseen force. It's becoming sentient. It's birthing itself into the physical world."
Kaida felt a pang of guilt. Had her actions within the Abyss accelerated this transformation? The book she carried at her side, still bound in chains of light, seemed to hum faintly, as if in acknowledgment. She clutched it tightly, her thoughts racing.
"We have to stop it before it takes full form," she said, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at her.
"And how exactly do you plan to do that?" Ardyn asked, his tone sharp. "That thing is the Abyss's will made flesh. It won't be defeated by brute force."
Kaida turned to him, her blue eyes blazing. "Then help us. If you're really here to stop this, prove it."
Ardyn hesitated, his gaze flickering between her and the towering shadow. "Fine," he said, his tone begrudging. "But don't think this means I trust you. Or that you should trust me."
"Noted," Ryven muttered, his hand gripping his sword.
As the group prepared to face the creature, the air grew colder, and a low, guttural sound filled the space—a mix of whispers and growls that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. Kaida felt the Abyss within her stir, its energy responding to the creature as if recognizing a kindred spirit.
The creature lunged.
Its form blurred as it moved, a mass of shadows and claws barreling toward them. Kaida reacted instinctively, raising her hands and unleashing a wave of silvery light that collided with the creature mid-charge. The impact sent shockwaves through the air, forcing the shadow to recoil with an ear-splitting shriek.
"Keep it off balance!" Ardyn shouted, drawing two curved daggers that gleamed with a dark, iridescent glow. He darted forward, his movements precise and unnaturally fast, slashing at the creature's appendages. Each strike left trails of light, disrupting its form and forcing it to retreat momentarily.
Ryven joined the fray, his sword a blur as he struck at the creature's exposed sections. Despite their efforts, it was clear that the shadow was adapting. Its form grew more defined, its strikes more calculated.
Kaida knew they couldn't keep this up forever. The Abyss's power coursed through her, begging to be unleashed, but she hesitated. Every time she drew upon it, she felt herself slipping further into its grasp.
"You're holding back!" Ardyn yelled, narrowly dodging a swipe from one of the creature's massive claws. "If you want to stop this thing, you'll have to give in!"
Kaida glared at him. "I won't let it control me!"
"It's not about control," Ardyn snapped. "It's about survival. Use it, or we're all dead."
The creature roared again, its shadowy form expanding outward in a wave of dark energy. The force knocked Ryven off his feet, and even Ardyn stumbled, cursing under his breath.
Kaida made her decision.
Closing her eyes, she reached deep within herself, pulling on the Abyss's energy. It surged forward eagerly, wrapping around her like a cloak. The silvery light that had once defined her power darkened, taking on a metallic sheen. When she opened her eyes, they glowed faintly with the same red light that pulsed within the creature.
She stepped forward, raising her hand. The creature froze, its many eyes locking onto her. For a moment, the whispers in the air grew louder, as if the Abyss itself were speaking directly to her.
"You are me," it seemed to say.
Kaida didn't answer. Instead, she thrust her hand forward, sending a spear of Abyssal energy straight into the creature's core. The impact was immediate. The creature writhed and shrieked, its form destabilizing as the energy tore through it.
But as the creature dissolved, Kaida felt something strange. The Abyss within her pulsed in rhythm with the creature's death throes, as if feeding on its destruction. A wave of nausea washed over her, but she pushed it aside, focusing on maintaining control.
When the creature finally collapsed into a pool of shadows, the world around them fell silent.
Ardyn approached her cautiously. "That was... impressive," he said, though his tone carried a note of wariness. "But you felt it, didn't you? The Abyss taking a little more of you."
Kaida didn't respond. She turned to Ryven, who had picked himself up and was watching her with a mixture of concern and admiration.
"We need to move," she said. "This isn't over. Not by a long shot."
As they left the battlefield, Kaida couldn't shake the feeling that the Abyss's whispers had changed. They were no longer just voices in the dark. They were voices she recognized.
Kael's voice.
