Qi Lin, holding Wang Yunzhi's arm, stepped backward cautiously as they tried to retreat. He kept his expression calm, but his mind was working on a different plan altogether.
As they moved, Qi Lin purposely stepped on a dead branch, producing a sharp crack. The sound echoed in the stillness of the early morning, immediately drawing the attention of the tomb robbers and antique dealers.
"Who's there?" one of the leaders barked, eyes narrowing as they all looked toward the bushes.
Wang Yunzhi, already nervous, let out a startled scream. Her eyes filled with terror as the group of gangsters turned in their direction, their expressions growing darker.
"Damn it! You said this place was safe!" one of the gang leaders yelled at the other.
"How was I supposed to know someone would be up here?" the second leader retorted. "Forget the deal, catch them now!"
Both groups stopped their transaction and quickly moved to surround Qi Lin and Wang Yunzhi.
Wang Yunzhi's legs began to buckle under the weight of fear. "What do we do, Qi Lin? They've found us!" Her voice trembled as she clung to his arm.
Qi Lin's calm demeanor never wavered. "Running won't work. We won't get far, especially you..." he said, his tone matter-of-fact.
Wang Yunzhi froze, thinking Qi Lin might abandon her. Desperation filled her eyes, tears welling up as she looked at him, silently begging him not to leave.
Qi Lin smiled gently. "So, we'll split up. You run while I stay and distract them. It'll give you enough time to get away."
Wang Yunzhi was taken aback. She hadn't expected such bravery. "Qi Lin... you..."
"It's fine," Qi Lin interrupted softly. "If we part ways here, we might not meet again..." He sighed, acting as if this was their last moment together.
Wang Yunzhi, moved by his words, placed her hand over his mouth, her voice firm despite her trembling. "Don't talk like that. You'll be fine."
Qi Lin's eyes twinkled mischievously. "I hope so. But there's one thing I regret..." he trailed off, looking away as if embarrassed.
Wang Yunzhi tilted her head, curiosity piqued. "What's that?"
"I'm 24 years old and have never been in love," Qi Lin admitted with a wry smile. "I've never even kissed anyone."
Wang Yunzhi blinked, stunned into silence for a moment. But before she could respond, Qi Lin gave her a weak smile. "It's just a thought. You should go before it's too late."
Wang Yunzhi bit her lip, hesitating. She glanced at the approaching gangsters, their weapons glinting in the early morning light. She knew Qi Lin was serious about letting her escape first, but leaving him behind gnawed at her conscience.
Taking a deep breath, Wang Yunzhi made a sudden decision. If he's risking everything for me, this is the least I can do.
"Don't tell anyone," she whispered, leaning closer to Qi Lin. Her breath was warm against his ear as she closed the gap between them.
Without warning, her soft lips pressed against his.
Qi Lin's eyes widened in surprise. He hadn't expected her to actually kiss him, but he wasn't going to complain. He savored the brief taste of her lips before she pulled back, blushing fiercely.
"Make sure you come back safely," she said quickly, her voice shaking, before turning and running into the forest.
Qi Lin grinned, touching his lips as he watched her disappear. Well, that went better than expected.
By the time the gangsters reached the bushes, Qi Lin had already bolted, using his Bolt-like speed to dart away from the area. "What the hell? This guy runs like a damn rabbit!" one of the thugs cursed, watching him disappear into the trees.
"Should we split up?" another asked, panting from the chase.
"Go after the man first!" the leader shouted. "If we catch him, the woman will come back for him!"
The men nodded and shifted their attention to chasing Qi Lin, leaving Wang Yunzhi to slip further away.
Exactly as planned, Qi Lin thought, sprinting deeper into the forest. He knew he couldn't outrun them forever, so he would have to outsmart them.
He spotted a large tree and quickly climbed up, hiding in the thick branches while the gangsters ran below him. Idiots, he smirked, watching them pass without a clue that he was above them.
After some arguing, the gangsters decided to split up, each group taking one of the two paths down the mountain. Qi Lin grinned wider. Perfect. He silently dropped from the tree and began tailing the group led by the tomb robbers.
The leader of the tomb robbers carried a cross-body shoulder bag that immediately caught Qi Lin's attention. That bag must contain something valuable.
Moving swiftly, Qi Lin closed the distance between himself and the tomb robber leader. Before the man even realized what was happening, Qi Lin was next to him, grinning like a fox.
"W-who the hell are you?" the leader stammered, shocked by Qi Lin's sudden appearance.
Qi Lin winked. "I'm the guy you're chasing, remember?"
The leader's face paled as Qi Lin slashed the strap of his bag, grabbing it and dashing away before the tomb robber could react.
"HEY! Get back here!" the leader screamed, fury blazing in his eyes. His men stared in disbelief, too shocked to move at first. "What are you standing around for? After him!" the leader roared.
But Qi Lin was already too far ahead. With his superior speed, he quickly outpaced the tomb robbers, leaving them cursing and fuming in his wake.
The leader of the tomb robbers gritted his teeth, shouting after Qi Lin. "What's your name, coward? Leave your name if you dare!"
Qi Lin couldn't resist the temptation. He turned back briefly, shouting with a grin. "Remember this name well: Chen Dongxi, teacher at the No. 1 High School Affiliated to China Normal University! Come find me if you dare!"
He laughed as he disappeared over the horizon, leaving the tomb robbers humiliated and defeated.
Ten minutes later, the tomb robbers collapsed from exhaustion, panting heavily. "Boss, what now? Are we just gonna let him get away with it?" one of the subordinates asked, his face pale.
The leader's face darkened. "That box contained Emperor Qianlong's ring! But don't worry... that fool has no idea it's trapped. If he tries to open it, he'll be dead by sunrise."
Just then, the leader's phone rang. It was the leader of the antique dealers.
"Did you catch him?" the voice on the other end demanded.
The tomb robber leader gritted his teeth. "No, he stole the Qianlong ring box and got away. But don't worry, we'll track him down."
"Track him? You couldn't catch a kid, and now you've lost the goods! We're in deep trouble. That box is worth a fortune," the antique dealer leader growled. "We need to regroup. I'll send you an address. Meet me there, and we'll figure out what to do next."
The tomb robber leader nodded grimly. "Understood. But mark my words, I'm going to find this 'Chen Dongxi' and make him pay."
