David paid for the room in cash, cash taken from the money belt he had around his waist. There was money for travel if he needed it. He had put it on before going to see Jessica, just in case. He hadn’t expected this to happen, but he had expected something.
David went to the room, absolutely certain that none of the cash he had given the guy at the desk made it into the register, nor anywhere else that wasn’t the guy’s pocket.
“You need to get some sleep,” he said as they opened the door. “It’s been a hell of a day, Jessica.” There was only one bed in the room. No couch. David took a second and looked around the room, taking in the details. One bed. One desk. One chair. Television bolted to a dresser. Bathroom in the back. Closet. “Take the bed. Go to sleep.”
She looked at him. There was something in her eyes, almost longing. Did she want to invite him to join her? Was she going to?
“What about you?” She was giving him an option, opening a door for him.
