He shivered as he came out of his bathroom with a towel around his waist. He made his way to the closet and stopped Infront of the mirror.
He had not aged a bit. His skin was still flawless. If you hadn't known him you would say that he was just twenty-two years old.
For most of his life, he had been alone. He had never found a companion. He could not say that life was boring because he made it interesting even for others.
Over the years he had women throw themselves under his feet so that he could mate with them but he never wanted anything serious.
He walked over to his sister's room but she was nowhere to be seen. He wondered why she never listened to what she was told.
What if someone attacked her out there?
He locked the door behind him and went by the balcony to see if he could see her around the compound.
That was very unlikely given the fact that it was raining but he went instead.
He took in a deep breath of the fresh air and sighed in relief as he relished the feeling of the cold air against his skin.
He saw her sister approaching the house and was glad she was back but she was not alone. A man was accompanying her and he wondered who she was bringing home.
As he looked closer she looked like she was arguing with the guy. He left the balcony and went down the stairs to see what was wrong.
She was already at the doorstep as he opened the door. From the look on her face, he could tell she wasn't very pleased with whoever had escorted her home.
"Who was that ?", Elijah asked her as he closed the door behind her.
"Peter ", she said.
"Did that manner less mongrel do anything to you?", he asked her.
"Brother, do you think I can't protect myself ?", she asked him as she made her way to her room.
"Ooohhh no don't be alarmed I know you are perfectly capable of handling yourself and that is what am worried about. You might snap his neck by accident and cause problems", she snickered and banged the door to her room.
She could not believe him. All she thought about was winning. It's not that she was important to him or anything.
He just wanted to look like the hero.
"So is he into you ?", he asked her as he stood outside her room.
"Why do you ask ?", she asked him.
"Can't I know who wants my sister so I can know if he is a good match for her ?", he asked her.
"Stop pretending as if you care, what do you want Edmund?", she asked him again. The edge in her voice is now detectable.
"Maybe you could keep him close so that we know if he is planning anything against us ", he said.
"What is wrong with you? wait don't even answer that because you don't see a problem in the things you do ", she said and her music went loud blocking communication.
Edmund couldn't hear anything so he just walked away.
Was he being a bad brother for telling his sister to do that? All he wanted was her to keep an eye on the enemy what was so bad about that?
Mateo paced around his room. He was pissed. How could he allow Edmund to get the best of him?
He had gone to their home prepared to crush them. He did not want them in the town. They would make witches look inferior to other creatures.
"Can you relax", said Arnoldo one of the soldiers.
"How can you tell me to relax? The news of their being back is going to spread like wildfire. Do you know what will happen if people know ?", he asked him as he let out a frustrated sigh.
"No, what will happen ?", Arnoldo asked him even though he knew that eventually, he was going to tell him.
"People will lose their trust in me. I can't protect them anymore. What good am I if I can't do the one thing that I promised them ?", he asked Arnoldo as he went to the window.
The community that he had sworn to protect till his death would slowly slip off his fingers. The worst thing was that he did not know if he could get them back if he lost them.
"He said he won't hurt anyone ", said Arnoldo.
Mateo already knew that. He was in the meeting of course he heard that part. The part which Edmund had emphasized.
"You are stupid if you think he will keep his word", said Mateo scoffing.
He wanted to be right so bad. Sooner or later he knew Edmund would go back to his old way and start killing people. It was in his blood. He just didn't know how soon.
"You just want to be right. You want everyone to think that they are the monsters ", said Arnoldo smirking.
"They are monsters they are just hiding under that false facade. They won't keep the act for long", he said.
"Their survival also depends on this if he messes up he will know he has screwed, he won't do anything stupid", said Arnoldo to reassure Mateo but he wasn't listening.
He was obsessed with the Watson family. They lived in his head rent-free.
Edmund knew what Mateo wanted. He wanted him to fail. For one of them to go rogue and cause chaos. That was not going to happen because Edmund wouldn't let it.
It was no longer even about the safety of the people. If was who was the better one out of the two of them.
Both were obsessed with power to the point where they did not know when it was time to step down. Two kings could not rule one kingdom.
Edmund never accepted defeat so there was no way he was going to stand down. He was also waiting for Mateo to do something stupid.
One of them had to step down but none of them wanted to accept defeat. Would their rivalry affect the lives of others?
Who was willing to be the bigger person and step down?
