CHAPTER FOURTEEN

It's been four days since McKenna and Elena returned to Abuja. McKenna went back to work like nothing happened. She was cheerful and unusually chatty with everyone like the only man she has ever loved didn't just turn her way. When Elena went inside Jason's office, his stuffs were gone and even though it was expected, it didn't stop her from feeling sad on behalf of her best friend.

Elena went down to meet McKenna in their office and found her on her phone chatting.

'His stuffs are gone, M.K'

'Of course they are gone. Mr. Yagazie is in Malawi and I am sure his replacement will be here soon' McKenna said nonchalantly.

McKenna stood up from her seat to get a cup of water from the water dispenser and Elena followed her.

'You can't keep acting like nothing is wrong. It is perfectly alright for you to curl up like a ball and sob your heart out like a normal human being' Elena said in a whisper.

'Elena I am okay and moreover crying is not going to help anybody but you know what might help?' McKenna asked and blinked animatedly at Elena

'Talking about your feelings like a human being' Elena suggested

'Yuck…no but going to that new nightclub on your street might help me with my sadness' McKenna feigned sadness

'Can you be serious, McKenna?'

McKenna looked at her friend and she wiped the fake sadness from her face. She was serious when she spoke.

'I know this is difficult for you Elena but this is not the first time I have been hurt. I grew up hurting and everywhere I turn there is a possibility of getting hurt. It is called life. Pain is how we learn, how we make ourselves better, so do you know what I will do with this pain?' McKenna asked as she came closer to Elena

'I am going to turn it into something beautiful like applying for a degree in Canada and…going to that beautiful nightclub on your street' McKenna finished with a joke.

'Oh come on, McKenna. We were having a moment and you just ruined it by mentioning that night club' Elena said and smiled.

The door opened and a lady walked in. she was elegantly dressed in a red suit and she was holding a briefcase. She was dark, slim and tall. The transparent glass she wore gave her mixture of nerdy and stunning appearance. She wasn't strikingly beautiful but the way she carried herself made her attractive.

'Good day. How may I assist you?' McKenna asked when she came closer to where they were standing.

'Hello, by showing me to my office. My name is Jessica and I will be in charge of the company until my cousin gets back'

'Yeah…I got an email about Mr. Yagazie's replacement. I will show you to your office, Miss Jessica'

Jessica smiled and followed McKenna. When Jason called to inform her that she will be stepping in as the branch manager on his behalf, she almost laughed him off. The last thing she wanted to do was to be stuck in an office for another two or three years while Jason goes off to God knows where. Jessica had just finished business school and she wanted to take a year and travel but when both her aunt Elixir and cousin called in desperate need of her help, she had to put her desires aside and repay some of the favors she owned to her generous aunt.

'Schedule a lunch date for 3 pm tomorrow, McKenna. Can I call you McKenna?' Jessica asked

'Of course Miss Jessica, you can call me McKenna. Should I book a reservation at Alicia Barney's restaurant and will I be attending the meeting with you?' McKenna asked

'No, I will be going alone. It is a lunch date with my Aunt'

When they got to Jason's office, McKenna opened the office and ushered Jessica inside.

'Welcome to your office, Miss Jessica and if you need anything I am just a phone call away' McKenna said and left Jessica in her new office.

When McKenna got back to her office, Elena was pacing. She sat down and opened her outlook to book a lunch date for Jessica.

'Stop pacing Elena' McKenna's face showed a little bit of annoyance

'Wait, are they just going to replace him just like that?' Elena asked hands akimbo

'Would you prefer they hold a ceremony and announce it on CNN, Elena? Because that is ridiculous' McKenna said with a smile

Elena's eyes narrowed as she sat down beside her best friend

'You look like you have moved on with your life' Elena said while looking at McKenna with intensity

'I have, Elena. Please be happy for me'

'Okay'

After work, McKenna went home and made a king sized dinner of fried rice and fish for herself and she watched the new episode of 'Grey's anatomy' and two newest episodes of 'Mistress'.

Around 11pm she went to bed and cried her heart out while using pillow to muffle the sound as not to wake her neighbors. She might hide it well but there was no need lying, not to herself. McKenna was the furthest thing from fine.
