The Painted

Ever since I remember I have always been intrigued by antiquated places. The kind of places that are abandoned with no trace of the human touch yet are crowded by the shadows of the past. The ancientness, the haunting yet captivating stillness that is shrouded in mystery has always called to me. The distant voice that sounds deceptively familiar echoes in the hallways travelling room to room with every intention of being heard and so I followed the echo taking me home. To a place that I have spent decades living in and yet don’t know how to find. It belongs to the deepest and darkest corner of my mind. To a place that is secluded from everyone like a hidden treasure in the heart of a majestic mountain or a lost shrine of an ancient and forgotten God, a place that I cannot enter yet know of its existence or at least I thought I could not until that morning…

A Nightmarish Creature

The first things that caught my eye were the large shelves adorning the walls,

perhaps it was a library previously.

There wasn't much in this room except a large bed situated in the middle and another set of thick curtains blocking all the sunlight,

it seemed like this place wasn't used for some time.

Quietly I tiptoed further inside,

'whoever it was must be hiding under the bed'.

Gripping the tool tightly I used the tip to pull the comforter aside as I bent down a little.

The room was quite dark and therefore I wasn't really able to see anything clearly unless I bent down.

Scooching further away as to not be in an exposed and vulnerable state to the enemy I groaned, my heart was in my throat.

"Come on Eve you can do it"

I breathed out as I poked around with the candle stand.

It was then that I noticed of a pair of shiny eyes staring back at me through the darkness.

"What the fuck?!"

I screamed pushing myself away and in the process,

might have kicked the bed as well because immediately the creature shrieked and jumped at me.

"No!"

I shielded my head with my hand as I tightly closed my eyes, "leave me alone"

I begged,

tears already glistening in my eyes.

"I swear I didn't do anything"

I tried to plead further, in order to prove my innocence,

somehow,

I was convinced that this creature was the physical manifestation of my biggest nightmares and was finally here to punish me for my bad deeds.

I rocked myself back and forehead crying while I imagined it looming over my head as it wore a menacing grin, blood dripping down its mouth and its long claws which inched closer,

were ready to rip my skin to shreds like a piece of paper.

The seemingly eternal ….. filled with my dark and twisted thoughts was finally broken by the sound of a high pitched meow.

Immediately my body stilled, my breath caught in my lungs.as I opened an eye unsurely and there it was.

What stood in front of me was a rather tiny cat with fur as dark as the night sky, creating a rather strange contrast with its blue eyes.

It gave me an uninterested glance while it continued licking one of its paws,

as if not fazed at all by my near death experience a few seconds ago.

"It might sound dramatic but I was about to have a heart attack because of you"

I pocked its stomach accusingly as I glared at it.

All it did was stare at me before shaking its head like I was so pathetic for the way I reacted before meowing one last time as it sauntered away.

"Well, I guess the mystery is finally solved, a cat"

I scoffed in disbelief

"Phew, thank god there was no one to see that"

I wiped my tears standing up and fixing my hair hurriedly, still feeling unconscious.

It was then I finally noticed the damp and musty smell in this room

"This room definitely needs some sunlight" I scrunched my nose as I strode to the curtains pulling them open.

The immediate exposure to the sunlight nearly blinded me as I shielded my eyes but once I removed my hand,

I was met with one of the most beautiful views I had ever seen.

It was of a garden,

with a long path adorned with red roses on both sides, it led to a seemingly large glasshouse which seemed to sparkle like a crystal in the sunlight.

The rest of the garden was scattered with trees that were blooming with white buds and even though everything wasn't as well taken care of as it could've been, I still admired all the hard work that the previous owners had put into it.

Taking a deep breath in contentment,

I imagined smelling the flowers but all I did was inhale the seemingly century old dust in the process.

'Damn, this place really needs a good cleaning' I concluded as I sneezed dramatically.
